GRAND MARCH WAS LED BY

Auspicious Social Event Wu Clinax
of Commencement Season at Un-
- j iversity of Texas.
(Houston Post Special.)
AUSTIN Texas June 14. Amidst th.
splendor of the final ball the twenty-
seventh annual commencement of the
University of Texas tonight came to a
close. At IS o'clock 150 couples led by
Murray Jones and his sister Miss Irma
Jones of Houston began the grand
march which was followed by dancing
which lasted until nearly four o'clock.'
The occasion was genuinely brilliant
In all its appointments. The entire parlor
floors of the Drlskill hotel where the
dance waa held was splendidly decorated !
and illuminated. Immediately preceding I
me emu was me reception at wiucn. were
gathered hundreds of students faculty
members alumni and visitors. Governor
Campbell and his staff appeared in full
military dress.
An excellent orchestra had been se-
cured and the musical program was of aa
unusual high order.
At I0:20 this morning ths graduating
exercises were held at which 204 stu-
dents were awarded diplomas. While th.
graduates were taking the places assign-
ed them music was rendered by the Uni-
versity orchestra after which Dr. K. B.
Wright pastor ot a Presbyterian church
offered prayer.
President Mexes briefly introduced the
speaker of the occasion Hon. Gccil H.
Smith of Sherman whose address waa
roost cordially received. With wit and
wisdom he drew repeated rounds of
hearty applause. Perhaps the most
striking portion of his address waa that
relating to womarh suffrage to which he
announced himself opposed and assign-
ed hi. reason with keen humor and con-
vincing logic. - .''
At th. conclusion of th. commencement
address degrees were awarded there be-
ing seventy-one bachelors of laws twenty-three
civil engineers two engineers of
mlnaa. 102 bachelors of arts eight mas
ters of arts and thirty teachers diplomas.
At intervals oi aooui iniriy ieai me stu-
