sistant were painfully burned last Tues-
day In a most peculiar manner They
wer- tiixlng a scraper from the line
whl- h had been disconnected and were
standing In the pool of oil when lightning
struck Ihe telegraph wire overhead and
whs conducted to the earth setting fire
to the oil. Mr. Carl was standing in the
oil up to his kneeas and was badly burned
below the knees hla only garments con-
sisting of a shirt and hat. but his assist-
ant. v.ho had on a pair of overalla. did
not escape so easily from the burning
