LOWERPRICES ON
VEGETABLES
How the coat of living may be held down
by larger vte of vegetablei and fruit on the
Alining table is explained by produce met who
assert that price are lower on nearly all sta-
ples of this line of provisions than for -i long
time. While the war in Europe has boosted
price on tuck thing 8 meat and flour which
can be exported and -used for feeding the
armies vegetables and fruit have to be con-
sumed largely in thia country and home people
are getting them at lower price than usual-
Big crops in nearly everything this year is
another factor making for cheapness.
Speaking along this line Wednesday F. A.
Boettcher of Desei-Bocttcher company prod-
uce wholesale merchants got down his books
for last year and compared price on thia day
last year with those ruling today in support
of his claim concerning the general "cheap-
ness" of Produce Row. Probablv the largest
tingle item of produce consumed and which
passes through the market is potatoes. Last
year's price was 1.29) per bushel while today
they are worth .03 to 1 10 per bushel whole-
sale. Onion are moved in large nuantitiea
and may be id to be another staple. Latt
year at this time the price was v and 8c
per pound .and now" le ts the price in large
lot. The figure glven are from sale nrde
and are not official quotations sent out by the
houses. Carrots beeti and turnips that told
for 8c per pound tat .September 23 went yes-
terday at S to 2W Cabbage is a big item in
the local produce trtde and it rs to cheap it
hardly pays to handle' it. Last year it wat
lHc per pound and now it is lc.
Taking up vHetie of fruits: Lemons; it
was thought senve time ago would be 81 per
box and nearly" everybody thought there wat
going to be a famine on lemons. The reverse
is true. Ittly has managed to remain neutral
and lemons are selling at 4.04 and 4..'K per
box. which compares with a 80 price last Sep-
tember .
A big drop in peart "is very noticeable.
Peart that sold last September at 3 00 per
