WRECK TEAM
Stanley Harrii youthful manager
of the present baaeball cbanplona of
the world saya " hia team ia good
enough to repeat its performance
next year and believing it plana to
stand pat on the roster for the race
of 1025.
Evidently Harrl overlooks the fact
that the Nationals won In a field that
was tbe poorest that ever got off
the marks for a derby In tha Junior
circuit. The American Legion can not
be any worse than it wa thia year
and it can be a whole lot better
which would indicate that tha Na-
tionals who won by one game will
be obliged to add atrentth before they
can hope to fight oJ aeven other
clubs and get a crack at tha winners
end of tbe world eerie pot.
There sre aging parte in the Na-
tionals as they won thj rear.' Boxer
Peckinpaugh is going to be a problem
when the next training trip atarta.
Injuriea similar to tbe one the veter-
an shortstpp suffered during tha
series don't heal very soon especially
when tbe afflicted campaigned aa long
as Peckinpaugh baa.
Joe Judge baa a trick knee that
lowed him up considerable. It'a a
constant menace because it ia apt to
rebel at any moment and pnt him
out of tbe game for long periods. Ruel
must have help behind the bat. Tate
and Hargraves do -not measure up
to major league caliber. If "Muddy"
should ever crack from the atrain th
Solon would be lost Continued work
that ia being piled on Huel on the
world tbur by tbe Giant and White
Box with whom Ruel ia won't have
tbe best influence.'
Then there is th National's pitch
log staff. The world know by thia
time that Walter Johnavn can not
go. the route any more. Zacbary is
not conaistent and Mogridge fass
reached tbe atace and ate where hta
once agile left ami can not stand up
under a strain any more.
Contrary to the general rippoU
tion tne .Nationals are not a young
club. Their three moat dependable
pitchers have nearly reached the edge'
of the precipice to toe minors. Judge
ia not an infant neither is Peckin-
paugh. Rice too. haa eeea- n lot of
berry. Zabniaer and Speece a pitcher.
re young of couree.-and will barring
acHdenta. Inat for -aome yeara longer.
But auppoae something should oc-
cur to render Peckinpaufh Judge
Ruel or Mirberry a liability rather
than an asset! A blow of the aort
would coupled with th physical
ahnrtrnminxs of Johnapn Mogridge
and .iK-hary take tbe very backbone
out of the Solons. .- '
Hnrria should begin preparing for
the future now. 80 many others
have nan de the fatal miatake of wait-
ing too long Stanley ought to profit
by the lesaon. MGraw goes en win
ning pennant because he never is
the other. He Veepa making replace-
ments often when he feels the pur-
pose would be served hv buying a
player he once sold. This la true
of Heinie Groh nnd Hank Gowdy and
it wan true of ( hnrlev Heraog.
Tnose who Keep close watch on
the major league clubs ara willing
to go on record now aa venturing the
prediction that WaxhlDgton ran not
repeat its pennant success next sea-
son with tbe same roater that won
tbe flag this year.
