wkarvet which are aow nearinf eom-
pletioa are road to receive cargoes.
' - Captain AHin announced that Dan-
' 1 id Bipley as Co. will be given wharf
No. IS which is expected to bt ready
to receira ships within the next week
r tea dart. At the present time this
' Company Is using wharf No. 2. Plae-
( ing them at No. IS Which is one of
the new series of wharves will throw
.'all shipping board vessels together
-: 8. 8gitcorich 4c Co. having recently
L been assigned No. 12 which was
' ' opened to traffic three weeks ago
' and is now folly facilitated to handle
cargo.
The port commission. Captain Allin
said believes that the new arrange-
' meat will be very helpful as it will
. give the shipping board vessel oper-
: - ators connected wharves throwing
them virtually together so that their
1 business msy be handled better both
by the commission and the operating
companies.
Wharf No. IS Is being equipped
; with a special arrangement in rail-
' road trackage npon which Captain
Allin holds patent from the patent
office at Washington. This arrange-
ment which is entirely unique to the
handling of ahipside traffic is situated
to the rear of the wharves and per-
mits the free movement of freight
cars without molesting others from
which cargo is being discharged or
which may be in process of loading
from the sheds. It will also serve to
expedite the handling of cargo from
or to cars at a much less expense
thsa under other arrangements where
congestion often occurs resulting 4n
- delay and loss of time which is val-
uable to shipper and all concerned in
the hsndling of this business.
Fowler McVitie shipping agents
and extensive operators into this port
will slao be given a new assignment
in wharves. Captain Allin stated Sat-
urday. They will be changed from
wharves Nos. 1 and 4. which they
have been sharing to wharf No. 2.
Wharf No. 10 the open wharf of
the series being completed at the
turning basin will be completed
within the next ten days the port
commission stated and will probably
be christened with the discharge of a
full esrto of acid DhosDhate scheduled
to reach here about that time from
Atlantic seaboard porta.
With the opening of No. 13 and
No. 10 three of the new wharves will
be put into operation No. 12 having
been used as a Sgitcovich wharf for
several weeks. No. 11 the other of
the series will be finished later and
assigned to some shipping agent
necessitating other changes which will
come with the new arrangement.

Plans for the Harllnrsn ihnn.h wan
drawn by Elwing V Mulhausen this
week snd the contract for its erec-
tion awarded to Contractors R. P.
Bledsoe and 8. A. Decker. The build-
ing will be of brick with an auditorium
0i48 feet. There will be two cloak
rooms Sunday school room snd a
choir room. A parsonage will be
erected later.
"Instead of forming a congregation
and then building a church we are
building a church and feel certain
that in due lime we will have s large
congregation" declared Mr. Long-
fellow in announcing the letting of
the contract.
No contributions for the church
work will be asked although several
who have heard of the plans have
volunteered contributions. Circum-
stances under which the church is
being built are believed to be un-
paralleled in the eons Is of church

belt on the O'Connor ranch was a '
gift apparently from the authorities
of the Catholic church while the por-
tion of the fourth bell descended to
the negroes after the originsl bell had
been abandoned by the roadside during
harried flight of its caardiena from
the border during the Texas revolu-
tion according to report .
The bells have a rich backcronnd
of history. Mission Nuestra Bonora
del Hefugio known as Mission Re-
fugio the original home of the bells
wss the last mission to be -founded
in Texss. It wss built in 1703. The
friars left it. Father O'Donohoe re-
cities before 1820 taking with them
the more valuable objects of the
chapel. After or during the Texas
revolution the Mexican inhabitants of
the town fled farther south. They
took with them the two bells which
hsve been missing for more than four
generations snd the rest of the fur-
nishings ot the chapel A large statue
of "Our . Lady of Befugio" was takeq
to the parish church at Matamoros
Mexico where it is still held in grest
veneration by the people and is en-
snnned on tne first side alter on
the left as one enters the chnrch.
The Mexicans who fled from old
Refugio in the Texas revolutionary
period founded two small settlements
south of the Nueces river on the
coast and bdilt two improviaed chap-
els. One bell was bung in the chapel
8anta Maria del Befugio and the
other in the chapel at Snnta Bita.
Theses little places were cared for
by the Oblate Fathers sfter the latter
took charge of the modern town of
Brownsville. When new bells were
bought for the chapels the eld ones
were sent in to Brownsville snd there
they remained for years in the patio
of the priest's home until Father
ODonohoe discovered thetn. Mrs.
Thomas O'Connor of Victoria who is
grestty interested in the preservation
of the missions and Miss Madie
Mitchell of Refugio then negotiated
for the return of the bells. The bells
it i believed were cast along the
border or in one of the new settle-
ments of Nuevo Santander. the pres-
ent Taismalipas. The lettering snd
the metal is declared to be of poorer
qualify than those brought from Cen-
tral Mexico.

Mrs. O'Connor relates that the
original mission was looted then de-
stroyed npd finally rebuilt. She de-
tails for the first time nn account

"After the decree of secularisation
of the missions and especially after
the removal of the Franciscans from
Texas in 1824. the mission buildings
rapidly fell into decay" Mrs. O'Con-
nor said. "In the case of the mis-
sion of Nuestra Booors del Kefngio
