the actual facta arc hard to obtain.
There ii a persistent ruajor that
Houston and Galveston are being used
aa baaei of supplies bj ta interna-
tional rlna of smuggler. Evidence
that a $200000 earfo wai nnlouded in
Galveston ba? and distributed to re
tailers' assembled in Hoaston . war
presented recently bj federal agents
who nude nanber of arrest. Ue-
porta of piote smuggling by air-;
plane froarthe Meticaa Border are re-
ceived frequently. More than one
airplane has been aefeed by federal
men in the last few ' months. The
government baa. tightened its linea in
an effort to break op naretftic smug-
glint but the large im(xrtations. If
they exist sKp through in most cases

'Wide here.
i .Oat of the medley ef rornor and
-gossrp one fact stands forth tin-
' ' disputed. There are a large number
addMa in Houston and the "ainall
'fry" the peddlers work their trade
night and day in spite of tbe besx rf-
forts of .officers to break -op tbe
f(raffie.
re this portion of America tbe use
of habit forming drags is' confined
largely to morphine according to
poKcc A few addicts use cocaine1 and
once in a while one is found who uses
heroin. Some sniff "chloroform or
take other medicines which act aa an
opiate or contain a narcotic in-
gredient. .
Confirmed dope addicts usually take
from 12 to 30 grains ofjnornbine Pr
day. A good many "old timers can
assimilate 30 grains men familiar
with the traffic say. A dose of two
grams would render a nos-uxer in-
sensible and 1- grains would kill him;
it was declared.
Morphine usually ia taken through
a needle and in most cases it ia hv
Jeeted into the larae blood vessel fa
the crook of the elbow. A confirmed
tale addict usually has aa open
woand at this place. Women addicts
somertmes inject morphine at tbe hip
probably aa a concession to womanly
vanity.
Cocaine ia sniffed into the nostril
usually although it maybe-injected
like morphine. Most " sniffers' prefer
heroin a it come in more convenient
form. . '.I
Tralta af "HaaHaaV
"Hopheada" have many peculiari-
ties and the expert narcotic agent
recognises them easily. Aside from
purely physical mark such aa extreme
nervousness a bunted furtive look
and dilation or contraction of tbe
pupils of the eyes they display a
number of habits which brand their
shame to all who know the action of
the drug. They eat little and nearly
always prefer hot food boiled miltv
coffee chili and other edibles con-
taming a lot of seaaoning. Often tbey
go into a cafe and order food and then
become nauseated before it id served.
They sleep lightly except when they
are under the influence of a heavy
dose of the drug. Usually they take
a "shot" before going to bed and re-
quire another when they arise. An
addict seldom ia a heavy liquor
drinker. Liquor makes him ill.
When they are under the influence
of the drug adilicts are a socinble lot.
Often thc-v gather in a "flop house"
and reeonnt their experiences at tie
same time sniffing or "shooting" mor-
phine. Weird laughter weird song
and ghostly tales stranger than tbe
most liirid fiction are heard. They
are in the addicts' heaven. Tbe next
. dayriiuks and withontHhe drug tliey
will 3e in his hell.
Unable to Hold Job.
Few ntMicts are able to hold a job.
Most of them are inacapable of bard
physical or mental exertion. Tbey de-
?;enerate iuto sneak thieves and a
arge portion of the petty thievery ex-
isting in Houston and other cities is
.laid at their door.
In a few instance however ad-
diets have performed prodigious phy-
sical Inborn for months at a time
driven by the craving for morphine
and the fear that they will he without
inenns to satisfy their want. One' of
the four men at the jail worked 18
hours s day over a period of months
spending nearly all be .made for mor-
phine. According to Houston police few
"curi-i" are permanent. In the vast
majority of iustunces. the addict
emerges from jail or sanitarium
strong ia the belief that he is "off'
tbe bsb'tk for life but soon takes it
up again.
Nearly always according to the of-
ficers it is evil nssoci'stes who cause
him to break his resolution and again
i lose his self respect. It is u peculiar-
r 'Jr addict that lie wanls to
. . make converts and to retain the com-
panionsbip of thone with whom he ha
' gone through wild nights at tbe flop
