WASHINGTON. May 10. In a
atatement issued today Senator
Morria Sheppard of Texas announced
hia candidacy for nomination. He
pointa out that be has reached placea
on senatorial committeea which will
entitle him to the choice of chairmen-
shlpa in the event the democrats con-
trol the next senate bis service to
the psrty and his continued attend
ance on the senate sessions during
the 11 yeara be has aerved in that
body.
Ihe atatement prepared by the
Texas senator is as follows:
'To the Democracy of Texas:
"I desire to announce my candidacy
for the democratic nomination for
United States senator for the ensu-
ing term. I feel that my experience
here iualifiea me for continued serv-
ice. I have reached placea on senate
committees of vital significance to
Texaa which are attained only by
long service and which will give me
tne choice of Important chairman-
ships in the event of demoerstic
control of the senate. I have also
become a member of the democratic
steering committee of the senate
which is virtually the cabinet of the
democratic leader and wblcb assigns
democratic senators to committee
placea and outlines party policies In
the senate. I waa a member of the
last democratic aenatorial campaign
committee and in the lnt national
campaign canvassed five States fnr
our national ticket at the request of
the democratic national committee I
have supported and helped to pass
many enactments In the interest of
humanity and progress since I hsve
been in the senate having been the
author of some of tha more protnl-
nenr of these measures f waa placed
in charge of the debate for the dem-
ocratic aide of one of the principal
achedulea of the tariff bill during the
long struggle which resulted in a
new tariff law in 1H22. I take pride
In tba fact that I have the best at-
tendance record of any senator a
record of practically continuous at-
tendance on the deliberationa of the
senate for more than 11 yeara and
during one of the most strenuous
periods of American history. I have
taken apeciiil pleasure in giving the
best attention within my power to
the wants and needa of my constitu-
ent a and I cherish beyond measure
the generous expressions In thou-
sands of letters of thanks from every
part of the State that have come to
me during my incumbency. Theae lec-
tera show an average of more than
one specific service for constituents
for each day of my mora than 11
yeara In tbe aenate.
"I am grateful to the people of
Texas for the opportunity they have
given me to serve them and the na
tion. Pressure of official mattera in
the aenate preventa a more detailed
discussion at present. In due time I
shall fully present my record and
candidacy to the people."

Both of tha latter propoaala were

made in the bill by the senate that
he hoped the measure would be modi-

Senator Caraway democrat Ar-
