WEEK PLANS ARE
NEAR COMPLETION
Chamber of Commerce
Heads Look for Suc-
cessful Evefit
Arrangements for the ninth semi-
annual "Buy-in-Houston" week
March 3 to 8 Inclusive are beipg com-
pleted rapidly according to J. C.
Kowlin assistant vice president and
gentral manager of the Chamber of
Commerce. 1
Because of the absence of T. L.
Evans executive seeretary of the
trade league of tbe Chamber Mr.
Nowlin is in charge of the spring
trade week. He believes the "week"
thfs spring will be one of the most
successful in history.
Registration booth will be in the
lobby of the Rice hotel instead of at
Chamber of Commerce headquarters.
All visitors who register will be
given free theater tickets and will
be accorded other favors. Entertain
ment plans include rides about the
city to various wholesalers and down
to the turning basin.
Railroad fares will be refunded on
the basis of amount of purchases.
Each visitor living within a radius of
200 miles of Houston will get bis
fare one way refunded if he purchases
$500 worth of merchandise. For the
purchase of $1000 worth he will get
his round trip fare refunded. If be
Uvea beyond this radius he will get
one way fare on purchases totaling
$750 or a round trip on $1500 worth
of purchases. Fares will be allowed
relatives accompanying purchasers
with larger orders.
Wholesalers have made special ef
forts to equip their warehouses with
full lines of spring merchandise and
it Is claimed that as much can be
bought here as at any trade center
In the South.' Merchandise will be
sold at low prices during the week.
The last trade week beld in No
vember 1923' brought in trade total-
ing $100000 above that of normal
times. With good crop conditions
generally it Is believed this figure
probably will be surpassed this time.
'White Cross'
Organization
Is Explained
Details of the plan to establixh a
chapter of the White Croas an inter-
national society to combat the nar
cotic evil in Houston to be one of
a chain across the 1'nited States were
explained to the Elks Tuesday night
by Mrs. W. T. Woodfin recording sec-
retary of the San Antonio chapter.
The plan was referred to the standing
welfare committee of which Johm J.
Boyle is chairman for action.
According to Mrs. Woodfin the orig-
inal chapter established in Seattle was
the outgrowth of the relief work be-
ing done by the Elks there and that
all other chapters have been sponsored
by this organization though all chap-
ters function independently of the
Elks.
If the chapter la organised among
the first plans is one to establish a
cers was expressed Tuesdav bx a
number of city officials and employes.
Ou account ot the city-wide interest
in the case one of the county or dis-
trict court rooms probobly will be
used by Justice Williams during the
trial. It was regarded Tuesday as
certain that a large crowd will be
present. Both State and defense are
expected to offer a number of witnesses.
