ers who have hesitated In deeding land
which was promised to the city ac-
cording to Mayor Holeombe.
Theae are the only obstacles which
confront the proposition the mayor
said. He declared that the Boyle hotel
property Is not needed and the bridge
could be built without it. The hotel
site was Included In the original plans
for the bridge snd was acquired by
H. B. Jackson a former member of the
planning commission. However if it
becomes necessary to have this prop-
erty the mayor said the city will obtain
it by condemnation.
Other property owners who Accord-
ing to the mayor promised! land for
the bridge are now asking the eity to
buy it and this the city has refused
to do.
"If the project falls through" the)
mayor said "it will be the fault of the '
property owners who now refuse to
give the city the land they- promised.'

. ' Although durlnf the past week an
increase In building activity it reflect-
v ed In reports at the city building in-
: specter's office the month is far be-
low June in the total valuation of
building permlte and there is small
hope of the total climbing high enough
to equal that of July 1922.
During the week ending Saturday
' building permits with a total v&kia-
. tlon of 1172165 were Issued. This
shows an Increase over the previous
week's total of 1139338.
Indications are however that the
total for the month will fall far un-
der June. The total for June was
: $1711083 while the aggregate val-
1 nation for July. Inclusive of Saturday
is only $680748. For July 1922 the
' total was $1624373.

Action of national officers of the
Leagus of Protestant Women in re-
fusing affiliation with the women's or-
ganisations allied with the Ku Klux
Klan was upheld Friday night by mem
bers of the league In this district
when delegates from three States voted
unanimously to indorse the attitude of
the national executives.
The meeting specially called was
held In the Ku Klux Klan hall and was
attended by about lire delegates.
According to Mrs. G. A. Young an
officer of the league the session was
called to consider reports brought from
the recent national conference in Ashe-
ville N. C by Mrs. H. D. Morse na-
tional president and Mrs. E. J. Roth
national secretary. At the conference
a merger of the various women's or-
ganizations working In the interest of
Protestantism was proposed but both
Mrs. Morse and Mrs. Roth looked upon
the suggestion with disfavor Mrs.
Young says.
In explaining the action of the na-
tional officers at the conference Mrs.
Young said "Our loyalty Is to a prin-
ciple rather than to any man or or-
ganization and the delegates did not
think they could consistently take the
oath of the Women of the Ku Klux
Klan. This does not mean however
that we oppose the principles of the
klan."
The probability of affiliation with
other women's organizations was not
discussed Friday night. It la stated as
the conference was called solely for
the purpose of ratifying the action of
the national officers at the Asheville
convention.
Mrs. M. P. Nellson of Alexandria
La. State secretary of the league in
Louisiana attended the meting Fri-
day night and spoke on the progress
of the organization In her State.
