Patriotic Americans and natives of allied
countries who are residents of San Luis
1'otosl Mexico are doing their bit for
America in the purchase of war saving
stamps through a war service committee
recently onrunlzed there with American
Consul Cornelius Ferris Jr. as chairman.
So far the committee has disposed of
J20.000 worth of stamp? and certificates.
and still the list is growing.
Information regarding the actlvttltles of
the committee were brought here tonight
by Dr. H. B. Tanner who lies here.
Dr. Tanner says there Is only one Amer

Jo" is dead.
He passed from the Jurisdiction of mor
tal law at the county Jail Saturday after
noon. Jo Jo s right name was James
Miller. His death was the result of an
unsuccessful attempt to escape from the
county jail several weeks ago during
which he was shot and severely wounded
d- janer -u. . riampion.
Jo Jo was under sentence of death for
the alleged murder of James Llston. a
ell known citizen of Fort W'orth on
the night of November 24. 1917.

at a conference Saturday cited the merits
of gulf coast ports as building centers to
relievo congested yards on the Atlantic
roast. In discussing his conference with
Chairman Hurley Congressman McLa-
more said: v
"In a conference this morning with
Chairman Hurley of the United States
shipping board regarding the eatabliah-
ment ot a shipbuilding .punt at uaivesion.

Mr. McLemore was very much pleased
with his conference with Chairman Hur-
ley and thinks the chairman will give se-
rious and early consideration to Galves-
ton as a point for building ships.
War Marvel Launched
at Orange Shipyard

ORANGE. Texas. March 23. The War
Marvel a sister ship to the steamer War
Mystery the largest wooden steamship
in the world launched here last montVi
was launched at the National' shipyard
Saturday afternoon at I o'clock. The
launching was a decided success. The
ship was christened by Miss Mabel Mc-
Veit of Galveston.
The War Marvel was designed by A. A.
Daugherty and approved by Lloyd's for
the Cunard lines and will be used in the
war service after she has been equipped
for the sea Yiere.
The ship is 315 feet long 47 feet wide
27 feet depth of hold and has a dead
weight cargo capacity of 4700 tons. The
War Mystery Is of the same size and
style of the War Marvel.

Crossed River Jordan

LONDON. March 23. The British In
Palestine have forced a passage of the
River Jordan bridged the stream and
established themselves on the east bank.
They afterward advanced eastward
against considerable opposition and are
continuing their operations according to
the official report announcing the cross-
ing. The statement reads:
"In the early hours of Friday our troops
effected a passage of the Jordan despite
the strong current. The river was then
bridged and passed by our forces which
established themselves on tho left bank

Item In the Indian appropriation bill which
provides 1175.000 for the Texas Indian In
PolOcounty. The bill goes to conference
with the Texas Item In It and every ef-
fort will be wade to have It retained by
the conferees. It is not believed tbe bouse
'will make a fight on the appropriation. Of
this sum $35000 is for the construction of
buildings churches and schools ana si&o.-
000 can be used for .the purchase of land.

Texaa troops at Camp Bowie In the 10th
division are among those who are slated
for late departure from this country to
