New York. Cotton Market.
? NEW YORK December 31. The continued
! steadiness of Liverpool and renewed talk of
an improving export demand encouraged an
iesrly advance in the cotton market today.

.14 points above last nights donna- figures.

a net advance of 8 to 1.1 points tor the day.
i Prices started at an advance of 6 to 9 points
in response to tHe higher1 cables. Houses with
Liverpool connections were sellers of the

better feeling with reference to the Ancona sit-

New Orleans Cotton Market.
NEW ORLEANS December 81. Better spot

caused buying" iri the cotton "market today
which' resulted in a rise of IB to 10 points at
the highest. The market closed 8 to 11 points

C:" Weekly Cotton Beview.
NEW YORK. December 31. The cotton
market h been quiet during the past week as
usual between the holidays but has shown a
generally steady undertone owing to the con-
tinued absence of pressure from spot offerings
and talk of an improving export demand.
The daily circulation of January notices
amounting in all to about 10000 bales has
caused some rrregularity but near month ef-
feriggs have been readily absorbed by spot peo-
ple of buying for foreign account while there
has been considerable scattered covering on the
advance f abdut $3 per bale from the recent
low level . -
Reports of better business in cotton goods
at Manchester have tended to emphasize the di-
mmisbini; stocks of Taw material abroad and
the relatively firm ruling of the Liverpool mar
ket ha been taken by local bulls as reflecting
an increasing need of attracting additional sup-
plies. The scarcity ot freight room is stjll evi.

and .M1-advices from Liverpool bring many
complaints retarding the cost and difficulty of

The prosperity in 'lumber oil and cotton have
been the chief factor contributing to general
prosperity m the Houston district during the
(Mat yaar in the-opinion of R. B. Bawen man
ager of the Houston of fie of R. G. Dun es
Ca. who in bit report on the year yesterday
called attenetion to the stride made recently
by the market for these commodities. From
Information he ha received on business condi-
tion the outlook for the new year in Houston
is extremely .promising and he thinks the
January failure liat in the city will be small.
Mr. Bowen said: "Nineteen fifteen ha
doted much better than xpectL In fact
moat business men went into the year with a
good deal of. fear and uncertainty. None of
u dreamed that cotton would redeem itaes)
no one expected lumber vellow vine.
to come back and the petroleum activities ot
tne past several months do not seem to nave
been expected bv the best posted experts. As
to just how much these three commodities hav
maae our prosperttv one can only look arouna
him and he will discover every person con
nected with cotton industry in Houston and
the farmers in our territory actually have the
cash in the banks. Lumbermen have never
been busier and in a great many instances
are unable to fill orders fast enough. For
staple sites and crades thev are setting a
price about which there is absolutely no com
plaint and on some items orders are Being
tilled at almost double the price which pre
vailed in the spring and summer. There has
OTB D... 4I8ye ...MipHSpy
been an average increase m price of more than
five dollars within the pist few months and if
the lumbermen are wise enough to hold their
production down good men in the business tell
me that price will go even higher.
"In many respects conditions in this indus-
try are better and more substantial than they
were prior to 1007. That the condition is not
a spasmodic or temporary one i best shown
when it is remembered that some of our best
and conservative lumbermen are actually buy-
ing timber lands and putting up new mills not
to mention the reopening of a number of large
onea that have been idle. The best part about
the prosperity in lumber is that they are get-
ting the money for their products and collec-
tions are all that could be desired.
"Business seems to be coming from all over
the United States and of course the export
orders hav contributed to the prosperity.
"On every hnd we her of new fields big
wells gushers and money. Strange as ij may
seem this added production comes st s time
when prices are steadily climbing. There are
few Haustonian who do not know of some
one who is soaking and has made money re-
cently in the ou business. -; . '
"Our merchants had very gratifying holiday
trade and during this inventory season the
are finding their stocks lower and bank bal-
ances higher. The demand for money fof
ordinary commercial purpose. ' That has been
light and liquidation has been the rule both at
home and with interior hank. Th number
of commercial failures in this section ha
been light and the tendency has been toward
smaller failures. Legitimate business is find-
ing no trouble to finsnet itself at attractive
interest rates and the number of new concern
reported by R. G. Dun ek Co. inc July 1
ha been larger in this district than for wvert
years. The conservative spirit that has ruled
most business houses during the past 11 month
ha resulted m profits instead of curtailment
for the past six months and if the same plant
are followed during the next IS months 101S
will be plendid one in every respect. I do
not believe the usual heavy crop of large fail-
ures for January will materialiie this new
year."

trict during December numbered six with total

Business Very Active.
NEW YORK December 31. Bradstreef
tomorrow will say:
While wholesale traders have experienced a
comparatively quiet week due to the taking of
inventories the seasonal pause is less marked
than in other years and in soma Instances or-
ders continue to come out in a way that hamp-
ers stock taking. On the other hand industry
too busy to take account of holidays proceeds
to higher ground holidsy trade at many points
being of record proportions orders already
booked for spring delivery are heavy stocks in
the hands of final distributers are exceptionally
low and hopea of an early ending of the
European war having wellnigh vanished the
consensus of opinion is that goods will have to
he bought here on an increased scale and at
higher pricea not only by our own people but
by foreign consumers as well.
To the foregoing budget of favorable tidings
must be added the fact that mail order houses
report record trade and that jobbers have re-
ceived relatively large filling-in orders at a
period of the year tpat usually affords a
respite from previous activities.

NEW YORK December 31. Approximately
in the judgment of Wall Street the year came
to an end with a marked diminution of the
strain In this country's foreign relations. The
response of Austria to the Ancona note served
as a stimulant to conservative as well as specu-
lative sentiment.
This condition found immediate and constant
reflection in the tone of the market which
opened with considerable breadth strength and
activity gathering momentum with the prg
ress of the session. For the first time in sev-
eral weeks the liat plainly denoted absorption
of in impressive and substantial character even
though some specialties were unduly activr.
Aside from the improved foreign conditions
there were other encouraging developments
such as additional highly favorable railway
statements a further advance in refined copper
to 83c for delivery far into the coming year
asfdSreiHirtj from mercantile agencies respecting
tfct promising business outlook.
United Mates Steel led the movement
throughout repeating its recent high price ot
80ty on a 2 point advance but the oil shares
particularly Mexican Petroleum overshadowed
all others by reason of their extensive gains.
Mexican scored an extreme rise of 104 to
124H a new high rec'ord and California Pe-
troleum common and preferred which rumor
associated with Mexican in a proposed hierger.
also wa( very active at material gains. I
Among the remarkable railway returns for
November were New York Central that system
showing a gain in net of $8788000; Northern
Pacific with a net increase of 81.463.000. and
Chesapeake and Ohio which showed an increase
of VD7D.60O. The heading company increased
its surplus by $803000.
Bonds naturally responded to the strength in
stocks even the Anglo-French issues hardening.
Total sales of bonds par value aggregated
$5625000.
United States bonds were unchanged on call
during the week.

KANSAS CITY December Jl. Operators
on the locsl horse and mule market ate pre
dicting that with the birth of the new year will
begin the backward swing of the pendulum in
the Southern mule market. For morr than a
year there has been practically no movement
in Southwestern markets of mules for use in
the cotton fields the large majority of animals.
being purchased for export. Recently how
ever isolated orders have appeared trom ouin-
ern dealers snd one has followed another with
more or less rapidity especially within the last
few days.
A trslnload left Kansas City early in the
week for Fayetteville N. C while since the
beginning of the week shipments have been
made to Mississippi and Texas points. Similar
reports of an awakening in Southern maikets
have been received here from Wichita l-ort
Scott and other Kansas markets.
"The demand is for large mules" a hading
local dealer said today. "Formerly the planter

CHICAGO December Si. Year-end liquida-
tion which found the market without aupport
brought about a sharp setback in the value of
whest today after prices had touched a new
high level for the 1915 crop. The close was
unsettled at 1V4 to 4U net decline with May
t 1.254i?1.25tt and July at 1.17.. Other
speculstive articles too showed losses for the
day corn to 2 oats 14 to 8$ tnd
provisions 2 to 22Vk.
It was not until the final hour of trading
that wheat began to break in earnest. At that
time a wave of selling from belated December
longs came over the market and forced into
action a number of stop loss orders. Fears of
hesvv deliveries on track had considerable to
do with emphaslring the weakness. Deliveries
tor the day amounted to fully 700000 bushels.
Corn weakened when wheat underwent a se-
vere tumble.
Oats had an independent advance.
Selling by pm krrs more than offset in the
provisions pit the. effect of higher prices on
hogs.
