f ' Ton and Howard Carter unearthed be-

v fearal paraphernalia of King Tutakb-

cuter door there were traces of re-
'eloatng.

fectex and when at last the excavators
nanagedto squeeze their way in an
jeatjabrdlnary sight met their eyes one

i ' Imamhlp.
I ' l Contents of Some of the Boxes.
' "One of these boxes was Inlaid with
; ebony and ivory with gilt Inscriptions.
' Another contained emblems of the un-
.. - tderwond. On a third which contained
.royal robes handsomely embroidered
ywitb precious stones and golden san-
gdals war. beautifully painted hunting
: iscenes. There was a stool of ebony
inlaid with ivory with most delicately
' 'carved ducks' feet. Also a child's
H ji istool of fine workmanship.
" "Beneath one of the couches was
Jthe state throne of King Tutakhamen
-probably one of the most beautiful ob-
jects of art ever discovered. There
was also a heavily gilt ohalr with por-
traits of the king and queen the whole
'encrusted with turquoise cornelian
- I lapis and other semi-precious stones.
( "Two llfe-stsed statues of the king
wlth gold work holding a golden stick
land mace faced each other. They had
handsome features and . feet and were
delicately carved with eyes of glass
and a head dress richly1 studded with
vgems. There were also four chariots
the sides of which were encrusted with
; semi -precious stones and rich gold
-decoration. These were dismantled
' with a charioteer's apron of leopard's
'skin hanging over the seat.
"Other noteworthy objects were
i -royal sticks one of ebony with the
Ihead of an Asiatic as a handle in gold.
Another was of handsomest fligree
work. There was also a stool for a
.throne with Asiatics carved on it de-
noting -that the king had placed his
' feet on the necks of Asiatic prisoners
i taken in war.
."Ji 'There; were some quaint bronze gilt
musical Instruments and a robing
'-.dummy for royal wigs and robes.
" There were also some exquisite alabas-
tsr vases with a very Intricate and un-
v known design all of one piece and
some handsome blue Egyptian faience
S'ahd enormous quantities of provisions
for the dead comprising trussed duck
Kand haunches of venison and all
t packed In boxes according to the cua-
? torn of the time.
i "There were Home remarkable
.."Wreaths Still looking like evergreen
nd jone of the-botes contained rolls'
j&oi paper which are expected to render
s mass of information.
"A further chamber revealed an In-
describable state of confusion. Here
furniture gold beds exquisite boxes
; and alabaster vases similar to those
? found in the first chamber were piled
' high one on top of the other so close-
; ly packed that it has been impossible
: to get Inside yet. '
. "Numbers of these treasures were In
a fairly good state of preservation but
.others are in a somewhat precaiious
. condition. The greatest care Is being
' ; .taken In handling them however and
i-: there la every hope that under Mr.
. '-Carter's capable direction most of
j. ' ' them will be preserved.
i.. c. "From the manner in whldh Its con-
';' ' tents were disposed It Is evidently that
' 4 -' this cache has not remained untouched
' si no It waa burled. There seems no
' doubt that the wonderful collection of
.' i; objects formed part of the funeral
". paraphernalia of King Tutakhamen.
Whose cartouche is seen everywhere
"In both its forms and that they were
'moved from the tombs where they
vwere originally placed and In order to
preserve them from thieves were
transferred for safety to these cham-
' hers.
. ' "The sealing and blocklne of the
v floors and I passages which have so far
':. been- openjfed suggest that metsl rob-
'. bers had Attacked these chambers and
:t --.that Inspectors of Rameses . IX had
"j reason to enter to reclose them. From
'.; i ihe famous Abbott and other papers It
4 '"Is known that these royal tombs suf-
i'fered at the handa of robbers but
" :' .""'- ..-whatever the chambers may have con
tained originally their contents today
are sufficient cause for a nsstlen
l the Egyptological world. "
