Harrison and Heflin Make Answers
Associated Press Report.
WASHINGTON March 6.
Senator Lodge of Massachusetts
the republican leader defended
on the senate floor today Presi-
dent Coolldge's telegrams to E.
B. McLean.
The January 12 telegram- Sen-
ator Lodge said referring to
"Prescott" was "perfectly triv-
ial'' and "perfectly explainable."
The senator said that Slemp
was in Florida; that the presi-
dent did not know his exact
whereabouts and had telegraphed
McLean because he assumed Mc-
Lean would know.
The president he added had
been unable to communicate
with Mr. Prescott chairman of
the republican organization
whom he desired to consult on
District of Columbia matters and
knew that Slemp would be able
to tell him with whom he should
confer.
"That's the whole story in the
telegram" Senator Lodge de-
clared. Senator Harrison democrat.
Mississippi asked whether Sen-
ator Lodge "thought it at all
strange that McLean should
know the whereabouts of Slemp
when the president himself did
not."
