SCHOOLS PREPARE
IFOR CAGE SEASON;
! JUNIORS IN RACE
: With the High school football season
qut of the way scholastic athletes will
turn Jhclr attention now to basket ball.
vWlth the spirit aroused In .football thi
coming fee&eon should prove a Hum-
mer.' ' Heights Central North Bld'i
Heights Junior. South End Junior and
Harrisburg al have a wealth of excel
lent material on hand and practice will
likely start this week If It hasn't start
ed already.
"'The Heights and Central teams will
be late getting started for the reason
that the two schools were wrapped up
heart and sole In the football game of
Saturday. It Is likely that the atn
letes will rest for a week or so after
their strenuous practice for the an-
nual game. After that the coaches will
get busy.
-f
Central has had (he edge In basket
ball for the past two years but things
promise to change this year. Heights
really went in for basket ball for the
first time last year. Ross Clarke de-
veloped some classy material and has
the formation for a fast team this
year. Central will not have a walk-
aWay for the title this year by any
means. Just paste that oh your hat-
band. f
And don't forget South End. Last
year this school gave many of the
senior schools a fit. There is going to
be a lot of surprises when the South
End quintet appears on the floor.
North Side also has been strong In
basket ball as has Harrisburg while
Heights Junior shows promise of a fast
team this year. . v
And while-talking basket ball don't
forget this. There happens to be about
five girls' basket ball teams In Houston
schools. How about a ague composed
of the Central Heights. 'Heights Jun-
ior Wst End. North Side Hardsburg
and Y. W. C. A. girls? Suggestions
are In order.

SPORT SIDELIGHTS
By "ANDY."
Ooeh it a tough world. If you
don't think It is Just try your darnd-
est to be neutral In a footbal game
between two school or college teams
located In the same village. Its been
a long time since "we went Into
school for the purpose of studying or
learning. There used to be a thne
however when we knew Just how It
felt to have' a team engaged In a cru
cial game.
Back home. In the. days when we
had ambitions to be pcesldsnt or
policeman or fireman we went to the
public high schools. In the same town
waa an academy which catered mostly
to the rich lad of the town. In fact.
none but the son of the big moneyed
men went there. -Of course we called
the school all sorts of nice pleasant
names. . And what rivalry there waa
between vthese school.
" Every year our hlghN school team
played the "silk stockings" as we call
ed the other school. For weeks the
cheer leaders In the school Worked
on ua Many evenings we went home
hoarse and unable to talk. ' The day
of the game ur excitement knew no
bounds. Let someone suggest that
there was a chance for us to be de
feated It was a mire sign he was i
traitor yea eveft a spy and we treat
ed him-roughly.
Then. came thctgame and the crowds
and the excitemVnt and the Intense
feeling. What alura w hurled at the
opposing side. Wbat ugly thing we
said to the opposing team. And pity
the. poor referee. If he penalised our
team it was an instant cause for out
bursts of "Robber crook blind man.'
Let him penalise 'the opposing side
he that Is something different "He's
a wise guy that referee."
During the game If one of our play
er wa kayoed we yelled bloody mur-
der. Let the other side lose a man la
this way and we cheered. What a
cold blooded fanatical wild eyed mob
we were.
V
If we won we paraded the streets.
Just let us meet up with some of the
students from the other school and we
were after them.. What wild timet
we had. The first sohoolday after the
victory .by mutual and uanimoua con
sent everyone forgot to go to school
or If they did go they did nothing more
enlightening than gather In the halls
anil filwAr' V
TJien all of a sudden as though
by magic this excitement died down.
Far quicker than It sprang; up did
It disappear and foon the men who
were heroes on the football team were
ordinary human beings. We soon turn
ed our attention ta other heroes baa
ketball track baseball and (In that
city) hockery. Each type af athlete
was a hero In his tun). His crowded
hour was short but sweet and then he
dropped from view.
When I sat on the side lines Satur
day at the Heights-Central game
recalled those daya. I wondered how
many spectators In Um stands were
thinking the same thing. BUt
couldn't get the thrill out of It as In
days of old.
There wasn't a partisan feeling. L
a poor lowly scribe had but one duty
to perform being neutral. And In be-
ing neutral at a game like that one
loses lust about SO per cent of the en
joyment of the game.
Even If he la hoars and tired and
maybe on the losing side still' he gets
a Dig innu u ne reels that he Is lend-
ing his support to one of the teams.
Some day I am going to take a day off
go away to some town where I don't
know anyone and root like the deuce
for one team. A we said before Its
a tough world when a guy has to be
neutral at a game like the Heights-
uenirai ciaan.
