Mr. and Mra. Frank J. Brown.
FEVERISH reloading of an old-
time alngle shot rifle from a
common stock of ammunition; hur-
ried glimpses through stockade
chinks of narrowing circles of In-
dian riders their bodies protected
by their horses' bodies; hasty min-
istrations to wounded men; over
all a hot June sun the hopelessness
of the besieged the smoke of bat-
tle these experiences and more
have fallen to the lot of Frank J.
Brown a founder of Friendswood
near Houston and one of the few
remaining survivors of the Adobe
Walls fight.
He tn a buffalo hunter of the 70s
during a time when Indians and white
men contested bitterly for "hunts-
men's rights" over the buffalo herds
an Immense source of livelihood. He
had many adventures and might tell
many atorles. but hv believes them
better forgotten. The little Quaker set-
tlement and school at Friendswood Is
the only one of its kind In Texas.
Recall Pioneer 'Days.
One of his pioneer experiences how-
ever has been recalled by accounts
of the battle at Adobe Walls the forty-
ninth anniversary of which was re-
cently observed at Miami Texas. The
fight occurred on the site of this city
June 27 1874.
Adobe Walla was a stockade-enclosed
settlement consisting of four
od and picket buildings Hanrahan'a
saloon Meyers A Leonard's store Roth
Wright's store and a blacksmith
shop. Twenty-eight men and a worn
an were In th settlement when It was
attacked by a great force of Comanche
Arapahoe and Kiowa Indians under
Comanche Chief Quanah.
The little garrison might have been
surprised and massacred had It not
been for the quick wit of one of the
Storekeepers who sighted the Indians
gave the alarm and rushed to close
the stockade gates. The fight was on.
Fire Through Loop Holes.
Brown with 10 others remained in
the Meyers & Leonard store and kept
up a continuous fire through windows
and siege holes The Indians circled
nearer and nearer losing scores ol
warriors but keeping up the attack
until they were in the shadow of the
stockade" walla. Here they tried to
make a stand.' firing Inside. through
the cracks and openings but ihe
ranchers' defensive evolleys were too
hot and the savages retired for good
The garrison kept to Its fort for s
few days ventur(pg outside only to)
count the Indian dead. Thirteen war-
riors had been left while an unknown
number of other bodies had been ra..
moved along with the wounded.
Bat Masterajon who died last year In
New Tork after acquiring fame as a
peace officer at Dodge City ' was

MEAT PRICES ARB
' SAME AS IN 1913
The recent announcement from one
of the statistical bureaus of the
United States government that the cost
of living is approximately 67 per cetir
higher today than It Wa 10 years ago
has brought a statement from P. W.
Waddell vice-president of Armour &
Co. tn the effect that wholesale sell-
ing prices for meat are In some caaes
lower than they were In 1(13 and In
others at almost exactly the same level.
Mr. Waddell submits the following
comparative prices based on. an aver
age of the trading la May 1913 and
May 1U:
111 1911
Pork loins 16 3-4 .14 1-3!
Boston butts 12 1-2 .12 1-2
Beef carsasses .13 .12
Spare rtbs ... .01 .10
Loose lard 10 1 S 10.10
Ham 2) .13
"It must J understood there are-
certain grades of products that sell
for higher prices than those quoted
and cither grades- that sell at lower
prices" says Mr. Wafldell. "but the
general standard of prices is Just about
on the lever-OS) 1913.
"In 1913 and In 1923 the-average coat
of hogs was about the same but slnq
1913 the cost of manufacturing live
animals Into meat has increased ma-
terially as has the cost of distributing
the finished product. The prices quoted 1
above are to retailers. Retail prices
vary according to the grades handled
and the service which a retailer gives
to the householder."

struction of a bridge over the Hous-
ton ship channel somewhere pear the
turning basin seer passed at a meet-
ing ol business men Friday afternoon

A committee was appointed to sub-
mit the proposal to the city commis-
sion harbor commission and county

points It Is new necessary to go
around the turning basin as far as

mora than nine miles.

gation board suggested that the uso-
pesed bridge be constructed at a point
between the last line of wharves and
the Southern Pacific tracks. At this
point the channel Is about 100 feet
wide. It la not known M present
what distance the take-off would be.

ing that some time this week th har
bor commission Is to turn over 1200
000 to the eity In payment for prop
erty bought on the north stdt of the
turning basin. It was suggested that
the city be asked to use this money
tn defraying part of the cost of con
structlon of the bridge. Efforts will
be made to Interest the Southern Pa-
cific railroad In the project with the
hope of building a combination nign-
way and railroad bridge. -
