WA8HINQTON Hay It. The Joint
declaration Issued here Saturday by
40 prominent Americans holding that
there la no antagonism between sci
ence and religion was assailed by
William J. Byran In a statement pub
lished today by the Evening Star. It
was given the Star yesterday by Mr.
Bryan during a short visit to Wash
ington.
Those who signed the declaration
Including Secretaries Hoover and Da
vis three bishops and other leaders In
political religious business and scien-
tific world were said by Mr. Bryan to
have "put up a straw man and then
assaulted It with big words."
'There la no antagonism between
religion and real science" continued
Mr. Bryan's statement. "Science is
classified knowledge; therefsre noth-
ing Is scientific unless true: no truth
can hurt the Bible. No truth can
harm Christianity. Our objection Is
to unsupported guesses put forth by
scientists In the name f science. The
guess to which we most object Is that
man Is a descendant of the brutes.
'The document published this morn
ing obscures the Issue. If the man
who wrote the statement had ex-
plained that the theology denounced
as medieval teaches that the Bible Is
true that Christ was born of a vir-
gin suffered for man's sin and rose
from the dead. It Is probable that
some of the men named would have
refused to sign. .
"If these men believe that man
came up from the animals why don't
they dispense with their long and high
sounding words and use every day
language? Let them point out the
parts of the Bible that they reject
