New York Cotton Market.
NEW YORK. Jan. 24. The cotton market
wat higher today on a' renewal of trade buying
and covering but the tone was stilj' more or
lets unsettled and advances were not fully
maintained. After selling up from 80.T0 to
S0.05 March contracts reacted to 80.75 and
closed at 30.82. With the general list closing
steady at a net advance of W to SS points.
The market opened firm at an advance of 32
to 27 points on firm cables bullish overnight
spot advices snd reportj that spinners were
again selling cotton or fixing prices. The mar-
ket was afso influenced by Washington ad-
vices indicating that the nrice fixina bill might
be held up indefinitely and after some little
irregularity sold about 3S to 51 points net
higher. January was held back by scattered
realizing in preparation for the last notice day
tomorrow but advanced to 31.00 while May.
sold up to 30.58 or 81 points above last night's
closing figures. The volume of buying then
tapered off and the market evidently met con.
aiderablc realising while there was a renewal
of Wall Street selling durina the earlv after
noon following later reports from Washington
that the price fixing bill was being considered
by the house committee on agriculture.
Rather sharp reactions of 20 to 25 points
were followed by a comparatively quiet and
steady market late in the atternoon.
Hew Orleans Cotton Market.
NEW ORLEANS Jan. 24. Early advance
en political news today carried the price of
cotton up He a pound on this market. Trad-
ing was active for a while but in the afternoon
the market became quiet and prices sagged un-
der realising by early buyers. The close was
at a net gain of 25 to 27 points.
On the opening brokers had a laVge volume
of buying orders to fill the demand being en-
couraged by unconfirmed reports of a revolu-
tion in Austria. Some accounts even went so
far as to state that a provisional government
had been set up at Vienna. The improvement
by the middle of the morning amounted to 40
to 48 points.
In the afternoon the tone was quiet and
prices showed little change after a sag of about
a dollar a bale from the day's topmost levels.

FORT WORTH. Texat. Jan. 24. Tie carf
trade made no improvements over the bad con.
ditions that prevailed at the end of the first
half of the week. No advance was noted on
any class' ef cattle : the best that could be
done to relieve the t!tuatlon wat to Pty steady
prices on some; the bulk of the run for the dsy
experienced snother decline. Receipts for
Thursday were scheduled for 5000 grown cattle
and 1008 calve..
The beef tteer trade barely held Itself even
with the 23 to 40a losses experienced on the
second end third market days of the week.
The supply wss not Urge tnd owners eld aloof
thinking to bring about a better condition of ai-
fairs by. playing a waiting game. The trial
brought out a treble response from the buying
side. In the end values were no better than
steady. ' Cows suffered another decline of 10
to 15c and at the greater part of the day's
supply was a the cow section the decline was
made effective. Everything in the butcher
stock classification sola on s lower market.
Cslves were sbout steady with the week's de-
cline of 7 3c to a dollar.
Aronnd 8000 hogs were present st roll call
the bulk of tl.em being pigs and lights. Mar-
kets north have been experiencing better weath-
er for the past three days and supplies are
now moving with more freedom and thit has
'rought about a declining msrket. Following
this precedent the local market stood tor tne
day at a decline of 0 to 25c on the bulk of
offerings. The beet hogs were only about a
dime lower.
The supply in the sheep house consisted of
gottt snd spring lambs and the market was
nominally steady.
Supplies tf beef steers were limited to s few
losdt the mott of these being on the.chetp
order. Esrly selling wss confined to the cheap
cattle sales showing up at 0.00 to 0.75. Sties
men waited for a better turn of fortune during
the afternoon session. Some 25 losdt of South
Texas steers sold finally the best making
10.60.
For the third- time this week the market on
butcher stuff weakened and cows sold lower
again this time the cut reaching to s dipse to
ioc. BUl lew cows were sola on ine morning
market a disooaition te wsit a bit belae seen.
However cows went forward with some xree-
dom as tie lunch hour drew near and went
over at 7.00 to 8.00 for the best in small lots
Bulla were week to lower st s rsnse of 6.20 to
8.06; heifers were some lower.
Buyers were spparently satisfied with the
pdsniage done to the vesler price list on the two
1st dV's of the week and refrained from urg-
3e any further decline. Nevertheless carves
did not move with freedom and at the steady
stand of the maVket few sales were made until
late. Generally the market was quoted steady
on calves. ' ' '
The stocker trade wat tteady with the decline
of Wedneaday. but the movement was tpat-
modic andVithout life. Steers went over at
7.20 to 800; stocker cows hid s spread of
0.00 toH.60. and there was a limited move
ment of stocker calves at 6.00 to 6.70.
Cornfed hogs topped the Thursday market
telling tt 16.30 and at that price were ac-
counted as telling lower. Armstrong picked up
the top and after the cream had been skimmed
from the pan the market went lotver by an-
other notch ey two dn the remaining light and
mixed portion of the supply. Pigt told with
tome freedom and stronger at feeder buyers
are becoming sctivs again. The best pigs sold
at 12.00.
Supplies of goats on the market told about
steady bringing 7.00; a part deck of spring
lambs made 12.50.

MARGIN
!RESENT conditions have resulted in a great
deal of short-term financing because many
governments municipalities and corporations
needing funds are unwilling to pay present
high rates of interest over a long period.
Rather than issue bonds maturing in twenty
to thirty years they sell securities which
mature in two to five years.
This gives the investor who. has money
available for a short period an exceptional
opportunity to get sound security coupled
with a. high rate of interest.
We have a special list of Mshort time'J se-

we recommend for conservative investment.
We shall be glad to send you circulars de-
