Dr. William States Jacob introduced
the speaker.
Canon Talbot pointed out that every
cataclysmic social disturbance bad been
followed. by a period of keen spiritual
consciousness which found one of its
forma of expression in a great burst of
architectural and artistic activity ine
profound upheave! now going on as a
result of the world war was certain to
produce such a reaction from thr mate
rialistic spirit of the past two centuries.
A great many new cathedrals are pro-
jected or under way. Canon Talbot said
among them that of St. John the Oivine
iu New York and the cathedral at Wash
ington the latter Intended as a great na-
tional spiritual monument.
Spoka af Groups.
Cation Talbot spoke of the two great
divisions in which the historic archi-
tectural styles may be grouped those in
which buildings are a natural spontane-
ous expression of their purpose and
those in which the purMses are made to
fit a form which is applied to them. He
discussed the Gothic aa so perfect a de-
velopment of the first class that it is
difficult to say whether it expressed the
logic of beauty or the beauty of logic
and traced the progress of .Gothic logic
