I AM HERE TO HONOR MEL GOLDMAN AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS
COMMUNITY WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING INTO EXISTENCE
THE NEW BALTIMORE COUNTY GENERAL HOSPITAL. A HOSPITAL
THAT EXISTS ONLY BECAUSE OF THE EFFORTS OF INDIVIDUALS AND
ORGANIZATIONS WHICH SAW A NEED AND DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
YOU ARE, I KNOW, AWARE OF MEL'S MORE OBVIOUS CONTRIBU-
TIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY, HIS SYNAGOGUE AND TO THE STATE OF
ISRAEL -- WHICH TRANSLATED MEANS HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO PEOPLE.
MEL'S SELFLESSNESS IS ALL THE MORE HIGHLIGHTED IN AN ERA
WHEN AMERICANS ARE REPORTED TO BE SELF-IMPOSED VICTIMS OF
PRIVATISM AND NARCISSISM. HE IS DIFFERENT AND THAT IS WHY
WE HONOR HIM TONIGHT. HE IS A DO-ER AND A GIVER AT A TIME
WHEN THERE IS SURFEIT OF HAND-WRINGERS AND TAKERS,
I WAS STRUCK BY MEL'S RESPONSE TO MY QUESTION ABOUT
THE CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH LED TO HIS iNVOLVEMENT IN REBUILDING
CAMP GLYNDON, A CAMP FOR DIABETIC CHILDREN WHICH, AS YOU
KNOW, HAD BEEN VANDALIZED. IN NO MORE THAN SEVERAL
SENTENCES, MEL SAID THAT HE HAD READ OF THE VANDALISM IN THE
