NEWSPAPER, THAN HAD "GONE OUT TO LOOK AT IT" AND THEN
EVENTUALLY TAKEN A TWO MONTH LEAVE FROM HIS BUSINESS LIFE.
HE NOT ONLY RAISED MONEY lAI SUPERVISED THE RE-BUILDING OF
THE CAMP. IN TERMS OF FACILITIES, THE NEW CAMP BEARS VERY
LITTLE RESEMBLANCE TO ITS PREDECESSOR.
HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU KNOW WHO READ A NEWSPAPER
ACCOUNT OF A PROBLEM AND PROCEED FORTHWITH TO DO SOMETHING
ABOUT IT? HOW MANY?
IN DISCUSSING THE FUNDRAISING DRIVE FOR THE CREATION
OF YOUR NEW HOSPITAL, MEL SPENT FAR LESS TIME TELLING ME
OF HIS OWN EFFORTS THAN HE DID TELLING ME OF THE PARTICIPATION
OF OTHERS. WITH OBVIOUS PRIDE IN HIS COMMUNITY, HE TOLD ME
THAT MOST OF THE MONEY RAISED HAD RESULTED FROM SMALL
CONTRIBUTIONS.
I CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THAT IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT MEL
GOLDMAN'S BENEFICENCE, YOU HAD BETTER TALK WITH SOMEONE OTHER
THAN MEL. NOW I DON'T KNOW WHETHER OR NOT MEL HAS ANY POLI-
TICAL ASPIRATIONS BUT IF SO, HE'S GOING TO NEED A CRASH
CURSE IN HORN TOOTING.
THE LIFE OF THE MAN WE HONOR TONIGHT IS A TESTAMENT
TO THAT WRITTEN BY THE PHILOSOPHER SPINOZA SOME THREE
HUNDRED YEARS AGO:_ . _ _
