ENJOY CAMPING
AT WIMBERLEY
A company of young people, cha-
peroned by Mr. and Mrs. Denman,
enjoyed an outing in the beautiful
and romantic hills of Wimbedly last
week end. Those who enjoyed the
camp were: Misses Thelma Mitchell,
Marguerite Byrnes, Julia Terrell,
Emma A. Lunday, Inez Jackson,
Emma Edwin Moore, Willie Cover,
and Messrs. Henry Y. Robinson, R.
F. Robinson, J. C. McDonald, Deskin
Decatur Snow, Bryan Cheek, Claude
Elliott, and Melvin D. Miller.
The party left San Marcos Saturday
afternoon about four o’clock and ar-
rived in the hills just in time to pre-
pare the camp for the night and en-
joy a swim before feasting on the
many good things which they had for
supper.
When supper had been finished
some one suggested that each one
tell a “Camp Fire” story, but it was
finally decided that, as one of our
number was a fortune teller that each
should have his fortune told instead.
So in turn each went to this gypsy
and had their forune revealed. To
some it meant fortune, but to others
it meant misfortune. For instance
one young man of the company was
told that he would live to be an old,
old man, tha.t he wouTd not marry
until very late in life, and then he
would be “henpecked.” Fortune or
misfortune, which?
There was one thing, however,
which happened that none of the
party will soon forget. Did you ever
have such an experience ? Were you
ever sleeping alone with the great
hush of the hills about you, and be
startled from your slumbers beneath
the stars by the unearthly screams of
a panther? If you have then you
know hat a thrill the members of tne
party experienced.
It was at the hour of two o’clock
when the camp was started into life
tty this far away scream, and all
waited breathlessly hoping that the
sound would grow fainter as the
panther moved farther away. We
were doomed to disappointment, how-
ever, and each wierd, unearthly,
scream which it gave told us that it
was coming nearer. Away across the
fiver, and up in the mountains we
could hear the baying of hounds, but
they wdre too far away. Some of the
boys, seeking protection, began to
Took for the girls who accompanied
them. Nearer and nearer came the
dreaded animal, but our fears sub
sided when it came close enough for
us to recognize the voice as being one
of our own party. Oh, What a grand
and glorious feeling.
After swimming, fishing, boating,
yes—and eating too—the party re-
turned Sunday evening, happy but
sorry the fun was over.
All members of the party join the
writer in thanking Mr. and Mrs. Den-
man for making so much pleasure
possible for them.
