V. S. Representative
21st Congressional District
Anti-Crime Legislation was
approved in tne House lasi
week. It was an extension of
the Omnibus Crime Control
Act of 1968. This program in-
cludes Federal contributions
to States to help finance edu-
cation, police training, re-
search, and other aspects de-
signed to improve law enforce-
ment and crime prevention.
This same program has been
in effect for two years. There
is no way to assess what effect,
if any, has actually resulted
thus far. It's been a matter of
trying anything, by way of leg-
islation, that might help re-
duce the zooming crime rate.
We can be sure, however, that
spending money, alone, is by
no means the answer.
Some people seem to think
the Congress can enact laws
which would apply to local
offenses such as riots, arson,
Bureaucats can't do it for
Churches can't do it for
Schools can't do it for us

The building of a healthy,
free, and independent nation
was blueprinted for us by the
architects of our Constitution
and our Bill ot Rights, but trom
that point on it is strictly a
"do-it-yourself" project. ...
Only ourselves, acting re-
right, but in general they are sume responsibility for govern-
all wrong. What concerns me mental services at the level
most is that they are all more closest to the people we will
eager to fix the blame than to witness the decline and demise
fix the trouble! of bureaucracy and relief from
Crises, problems, and alarm the staggering cost of big gov-
about them are not unusual in . - -
America. We can all take prit
and we should find comfort,
in the fact that this nation has
endured crises of one. kind or
another for almost two hun-
dred years. It has endured be-
cause it was founded upon
strong basic principles which
were built to last.
Like a piece of fine old sil-
ver, our Constitution has not
deteriorated with the passing
of time, it only appears now
to be tarnished from neglect.
And, with rededication, with
determination, and with el-
bow grease, it will polish and
gleam anew!
It isn't new approaches we
need so much as it is a sharp-
ening up and restoration of
values to our old approaches.
Indeed, there is little wrong
with society today that can-
not be righted through a return
to the noble ideals of our
founding fathers.
Radicals can't do it for us. ..
News media can't do it for
us.....
Politicians can't do it for
us ....

New Mexico. In Colorado they

They reported an enjoyable
and cool vacation.

Down in Louisiana there’s a spot which casts a spell of reverence upon
my soul.
But what I have found along the bayou I have seen, too, in the awesome
might of a granite peak, in the mystic wonder of a shadowy canyon. I have
heard it in the restless symphony of the surf at night. .
These, the shrines of nature, are God’s hint of a spiritual meaning in life.
But, long ago, man responded to God’s hint. The churches in which we
worship and learn and serve—these are the workshops He inspired. Week by
week, year by year, under the hand of the Master, lives are being fashioned
to His blueprint. . . devoted to His purpose.
Yes, we can find God in nature! Blit the road of spiritual discovery only
begins along the bayou. It goes on from there to our highest quest.
