PROTEST
Continued from Page 6
grew concerned because he feared that word
of a planned protest might deter Jones from
any serious consideration of dropping the
show.
William Waybourn, a founder of the
Alliance and a steering committee member
with the national effort to end Dr. Laura's tele-
vision show, disagrees. He weighed in on
DGLA's decision to move forward with protest
preparation. And while he encouraged the
Alliance to rally, he stressed that the move was
up to them.
"Dallas has a long history of becoming
involved in national efforts, and this isn't the
first time you've stepped up to the plate and
done things," he said referring to the Alliance's
choice to participate. He called the meeting
with KTVT a nice first step.
However, a source, which asked to remain
anonymous, said that Channel 11 does not
have the power to cancel the Paramount
Studios-produced program. The source said
inside talks with CBS heads indicated that
because of contractual agreements between
CBS and Paramount the television group
would not drop the show from any of its sta-
tions.
Channel 11, which is owned and operated
by CBS, told Dallas Voice previously that the
community's concerns had been forwarded to
their parent company and that plans were
"go" to air the program. Jones is out of town,
and a station representative said she could not
speak about contractual promises to run Dr.
Laura's program.
Nonetheless, protest coordinators predict-
ed Tuesday that any meeting with Channel 11
would not result in the show's cancellation.
Waybourn agreed.
"One of two things is going to happen. One
Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance presi-
dent John Ames ... "We're going to use
[the protest] as a negotiating tool."
— you've gotten as far you're going to go. He's
going to be polite.. You're going to be polite,
and you can still have your demonstration," he
said. "Or, you can go to the next level, which is
having talks with them about how to be repre-
sentative of the community that they serve and
not put this type of garbage on TV. I don't
think you're going to get to the second level."
If the meeting with Channel 11 executives
results in the cancellation of the program, it
would be a first, Waybourn said, adding that
would make Dallas "the heroes of the coun-
try."
Coordinators for the protest, scheduled at 1
p.m. at Channel 11's Dallas office, 10111 N.
Central Exprw., said they will have speakers,
including North Haven United Methodist
Church minister John Thornburg, national
protest organizer Robin Tyler and officers of
PFLAG, GLAAD and other groups. V
