TRAVEL
AIDS.
Take a trip back to New York
City—circa 1978—and you would
have the current lifestyle in Amster-
dam. Eight out of every ten men’s
bars have flourishing back rooms,
legal Houses with Boys (prostitution)
are almost as numerous as the bars
and the live sex shows and gay cine-
mas have as much going on offstage
as on.
“The Netherlands have only had 28
cases of AIDS,” said the bar owner of
The Company, “so it really hasn’t
affected life here as much as in some
cities—such as in the States and in
London.”
But if you are careful—and you can
overlook the fact that Amsterdam is
not touting the new gay rules of safer
sex—the city is certainly a wonderful
holiday.
Amsterdan’s city motto is live and
let live, and it is certainly apparent.
Gays can walk down any street arm-
in-arm and not even elicit a second
look. More than 15 gay hotels flourish
and over 40 gay bars in the city cater
to a tourist clientele from all over the
world.
Both marijuana and hashish are
legal in Amsterdam, sold in coffee-
shops with a menu from which you
can order the different types for
seemingly pennies. The gay bars pro-
vide tins with papers for their custo-
mers to roll while they are having a
Heineken.
Prostitution is also legal and by
menu. A House with Boys—boys
meaning anything from age 16 (the
age of consent) to about 35—operate
with a bar on the lower floor. You can
stay for just a drink, or pick out a man
who is waiting on tables or just loung-
ing, watching porn video on tele-
vision. You can then obtain a sex
menu, which lists various activities
and the cost for each. The rooms are
upstairs.
Live sex shows also flourish in the
red light district and these are not for
the faint of heart, although busloads
of 40ish French women on a tourist
holiday seemed to be able to stomach
just about anything, including a
rather heavy gay leather trip that
was included as one of the acts in a
famous sex show.
During the day, the city is a won-
derful place for thY tourist. A roman-
tic trip on a canal, wandering
through one of many museums or the
famed Anne Frank house, a trip
through the Heineken brewery or a
day-trip to the all-nude Vandoorf
beach (about 30 minutes away) are
some of the highlights.
At night, the meals are wonderful
and inexpensive. A full-course steak
dinner and drinks—about $25 in the
States—cost only 30 gilders (about

I seems almost self-destructive to re-
AMSTERDAM—Amsterdam is a port on the great pleasures of this city
gay holiday, to say the least. But it I built on canals in this day and age of
