Centrists previal in Court's abortion ruling
Pro-choice and anti-abortion forces had eagerly awaited the Supreme Court’s decision in Planned Parenthood of
Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, which the court released on Monday, the last day of its 1991-92 term.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision this week
approving minor restrictions on abortions but retaining
the concept that early-term abortion is a woman's
constitutional right has, according to pro-choice
advocates, eviscerated the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision
which established a woman’s fundamental right to
abortion.
At the same time, say most anti-abortion
spokespeople, the Court's ruling continues to allow
virtually unrestricted abortion-on-demand during the
early stages of pregnancy.
The only group consistently praising the Court's
decision were politicians, who were relieved that the
Court mapped a moderate course through the abortion
quagmire, taking some of the edge off the issue as
election campaigns loom.
Actually, the high Court retained its general finding
in Roe v. Wade, that the right to privacy entitles
women to obtain an abortion with little restriction
during the first three months of pregnancy. But it
approved some restrictions imposed by the State of
Pennsylvania, such as requiring women to undergo a
24-hour waiting period and obtain a state-sponsored

Design Industries Foundation for AIDS
(DIFFA), announced it will devote two
hours of prime time to the broadcast of
In A New Light, an information and
entertainment special focusing on AIDS.
The program will air on Saturday, July
11 at 7 p.m. Central Daylight Time.
Net advertising proceeds from the
special will be donated to DIFFA, which
provides grants to AIDS organizations
nationwide for AIDS education,
