[again]."
Rasansky said that one of the residents is
scheduled to call him to arrange the luncheon
when he returns from an overseas trip.
Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance Political
Action Committee co-chair Sally O'Connor
said that she is hopeful for improved commu-
nication with Rasansky.
"I want to give him the benefit of the
doubt," said O'Connor, who is one of
Rasansky's constituents. "I would hope that
Mr. Rasansky is truly misinformed because
that can be resolved — we can educate him.
O'Connor said her concerns are partly
related to Rasansky and one other council
member opposing the nondiscrimination ordi-
nance last year. The other council member left
city government after his term expired.
Rasansky countered that he opposed the
nondiscrimination ordinance because of con-
cerns about its impact on the small business
owner. The council member said he would
have voted for the ordinance if its sponsor, gay
Mayor Pro Tem John Loza, had agreed to an
amendment requiring the plaintiff in a nondis-
crimination case to pay the defendant's legal
costs if the plaintiff lost the case.
"The maker wouldn't accept [the amend-
ment]," Rasansky said. "I was willing to vote
for it."
O'Connor said, that she attributes the fail-
ure of the gay and lesbian community to
receive Ransansky's support in part to his
enormous popularity and political power in
the district.
"Perhaps, that is a lesson in why no candi-
date should ever be allowed to run unop-
posed," O'Connor said. T
4 lawmakers honored by gay Democrats
Leaders of gay lobby, gay alliance
recognized at Sunday's reception

Four state lawmakers and other gay leaders
were recognized for supporting the gay com-
munity in state and local political issues.
Stonewall Democrats honored the digni-
taries Sunday at a reception at the home of
Richard Shampaign and Jeff Henderson.
Honorees included the four lawmakers
who voted against a measure prohibiting gay
civil unions, known as the Defense of Marriage
Act, and leaders of the Lesbian and Gay Rights
Lobby of Texas and the Dallas Gay and
Lesbian Alliance.
Reps. Terri Hodge and Roberto Alonzo
attended the reception. Sen. Royce West was
still in Albuquerque, N.M. with fellow rebel
Democrats and Rep. Yvonne Davis was in
Denver raising money for the 11 who
remained in Albuquerque Sunday.
The senators fled to New Mexico to keep
Republicans from implement redistricting
measures that would likely win them more
seats in state legislature.
Late last week, John Whitmire of Houston
went back to Austin, and late Monday night,
remaining Democratic senators decided to
return to Texas to attend a hearing Thursday
before going to their homes.
The reception's honorees "have worked
long hours and fought the good fight in order
for the Dallas GLBT community to enjoy its
livelihood free from discrimination, just like
any other American," said Jesse Garcia,
Stonewall Democrats of Dallas communica-
tions director.
The evening began with hors d oeuvres fol-
lowed by a brief ceremony in which Stonewall
Democrats of Dallas president Shannon Bailey
introduced honorees.
Hodge said she supports issues important
to the gay community because they are "peo-
ple issues."
She said she is always happy to attend
Stonewall Democrat functions and thanked
the group for their support.
Hodge said when Democratic lawmakers
fled to Ardmore, Okla., to oppose redistricting
