State Reps. Roberto Alonzo, left, and Terri Hodge are pictured with Stonewall
Democrats president Shannon Bailey. Two other honorees, state Sen. Royce West
in May, the first gift that arrived was for her
and it was flowers from the Stonewall
Democrats.
Hodge said, even though the reception was
in honor of the lawmakers, she wanted to
honor Stonewall Democrats and the gay com-
munity for standing behind their beliefs.
Alonzo told the group he voted against
DOMA because it was the right thing to do.
Texas country star Willie Nelson sent a card
The honorees "fought the good
fight in order for the Dallas
GLBT community to enjoy its
livelihood free from discrimina-
tion/'
to the Democrats in Ardmore that read, "Stand
your ground," Alonzo said. He encouraged the
gay community and Democrats to continue
standing their ground against other proposals,
including redistricting and Proposition 12,
which would add a provision to the Texas
Constitution authorizing the Legislature to set
caps on lawsuit damages.
Randall Ellis, executive director of the
Lesbian and Gay Rights Lobby of Texas,
thanked all Dallas organizations for working
together to defeat anti-gay legislation.
The Lesbian and Gay Rights Lobby of Texas
lobbies state congress to eliminate measures
that discriminate based on sexual orientation
and gender identity.
Roger Wedell, president of the Dallas Gay
and Lesbian Alliance thanked everyone
involved in working to pass the city's non-dis-
crimination ordinance, including city council
member Ed Oakley, who attended the recep-
tion.
Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance promotes
gay civil rights socially and politically.
The organization organized efforts that led
to the passage of Dallas' non-discrimination
ordinance in May 2002.
At the end of the evening, Stonewall
Democrats auctioned a framed lithography of
the state capitol with original signatures of the
51 Democrats who went to Ardmore.
Hodge won the bidding at $1,200 and gave
the work back to Stonewall Democrats for a
future auction.
"Talk about a true political ally and hero of
the GLBT community," Garcia said of Hodge.
A copy of the signed print recently sold in
Washington D.C. for $8,000, Garcia said. T
