became too much for her to bear. She claimed
to have spent $500,000 in improvements and
covering the club's monthly net loss in the past
year.
The trainer said that a gay investor offered
to buy into the health club in January, but
Milmo rejected the proposal.
"If she was having so much financial prob-
lems, why didn't she put it up for sale to pro-
tect the interests of her members and employ-
ees?" the trainer said.
Milmo said that she was negotiating with
the landlord for "rent relief," and that the start

through a lot in his life," said Winslow, who
has mentored the student since January 2002.
"He's just so gifted in dance."
An incident report filed by DART police
makes no mention of the anti-gay slurs, but
Winslow said that he expects the student was
too shaken up to inform police of those details
immediately. The officers now know that anti-
gay sentiment might be a factor in the crime,
he said.
"He was in shock and so frustrated that he
probably just forgot to tell them," Winslow
said.
When the student arrived home in
Richardson he "started breaking down," said
Winslow. The boy lived in foster care from
ages six to 12, he said.
The police report said that another student
told officers that Dallas Can Academy stu-
dents "often caused problems" for the arts
magnet school's students. The victim did not
get a good look at his assailants and could not
describe them, the report said.
Officers searched for the youths near the
train station but found no one matching the
descriptions, according to the report.
The victim declined medical attention, the
report said.
Dallas Can Academy officials, including
the superintendent and Live Oak campus
principal, promised to do whatever they could
to help remedy the problem, Winslow said.
"Dallas Can Academy got right on it,"
Winslow said.
of eviction proceedings caught her off guard.
Shortly after the closing, the health club
operator said she decided to file for protection
under federal bankruptcy laws.
Several members with prepaid member-
ships have filed complaints with the Texas
Attorney General's Office.
Bankruptcy proceedings typically involve
liquidation of assets and disbursements of
available funds to creditors.
Both Milmo and Centrum building man-
agement said they would like to see the facili-
ty reopened as a health club as quickly as pos-
sible. Milmo said that the club held special sig-
nificance for her, and Centrum building repre-
sentative Jeff Shea described the club as an
asset to the community. ▼
Academy public relations director Cheryl
Rios said that school officials are uncertain if
their students actually committed the crime
because a number of schools' students use the
same train stop.
"It did create an awareness of prejudice to
us that initiated a campus-widb assembly on
Sept. 5," Rios said. "We explained what type of
action will not be tolerated, and that it would
be grounds for dismissal."
Similar assemblies are planned at the
Academy's other campuses, along with a staff
seminar on tolerance issues, she said.
The principal also met with the principal of
Booker T. Washington and Winslow was invit-
ed to attend, said Rios.
Booker T. Washington principal Kenn
Franklin said that he advised school security
of the incident because of concerns about stu-
dents attending late-night rehearsals and
walking to DART stations.
Franklin said school officials have a respon-
sibility to ensure the safety of students on cam-
pus and to and from campus.
"We think that is very important/' Franklin
said.
Winslow said that the experience has frus-
trated him because two gay and lesbian organ-
izations he contacted appeared to be either
uninterested in the problem or unable to assist
him.
Winslow said that the assault occurred just
before the student was scheduled to appear in
a dance performance on Labor Day. He was
scheduled for rehearsal on the night of the
assault, he said.
"He did perform, but he was so dis-
traught," Winslow said. ▼
