Community heads
out to Ballpark in
Arlington Sunday
as Rangers battle
the Oakland A's
**** here's nothing like rooting for the
home team — even if they don't stand
a chance making the playoffs. On
Sunday, the Texas Rangers play the
Oakland Athletics on what will be the
first (unofficial) Gay Day at the Ballpark in
Arlington. At this point the Rangers — now
last place in the American League West — are
striving for personal goals even if the team
outcome is predetermined.
Some of the most amazing games are all
about watching the exceptional athletes take
the field, and the Rangers have some heroic
players. In only his third season with the
Rangers, Alex Rodriguez has consistently
proven himself as a genuinely gifted sports-
man.
In 1996 at age 21, A-Rod hit 36 home runs,
becoming the third youngest player in history
to hit 35-plus homers during a season. In 2001,
his first year with the Rangers, he hit 52
homers, which was five more than the club
record and the most ever by a Major League
shortstop. Currently, he holds the American
League home run lead at 42.
And when it comes to big hitters with con-
sistent impact on the game, A-Rod is in good
company. With 18 years under his belt, Rafael
Palmeiro still plays a fantastic game. In 2002,
Raffy finished third in the American League
with 43 homers and capped off the season by
becoming the first player in major league his-
tory to his at least 38 home runs in 8 consecu-
tive seasons.
When it comes to pitching, Oakland has the
upper hand. The A's currently have three
pitchers (Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and
Barry Zito) in the American League's top 10
based on earned-run average. But that doesn't
make them invincible. The A's have lost 60
games this season. And even though they're
first in American League West, the Rangers'
batters will hopefully come alive against the
A's pitching.
Organizers were originally hoping to sell
1,000 tickets for the Gay Day event with a
human pride flag represented by T-shirts in
the rainbow colors. But Gil Flores of the
Resource Center of Dallas says that now the
goal is closer to 300.
"And the rainbow flag idea has unfortu-
nately been cancelled because the shirts were
to be donated by a sponsor. But we're encour-
aging people to maybe wear red shirts, which
are just very bright and visible," Flores says.
Tickets are still available. They're $12 if you
purchase them from the Resource Center, just
call over beforehand in case they sell out.
Six other gay organizations are also selling
tickets: the Dallas Independent Volleyball
Association, rugby team Dallas Diablos,
Pegasus Slowpitch Softball Association, the
North Texas Women's Sports Association the
Texas Gay Rodeo Association and Series 2004,
the committee that's bringing the Gay World
Series to Dallas next year.. From the $12 ticket
price, $6 will benefit those organizations
You can always purchase tickets at the gate
for $16. Gay Day seats are in section 330 and
331, which is near home plate on the third
level. Tickets do not include the parking fee.
Flores says the Gay Day event is just an
easy-going chance to catch a game at the
Ballpark — nothing more than a community-
based social outing. Sounds like furl. ▼
