televisian^B The Real World holds casting auditions in Dallas
Being a reality TV celebrity
and public humiliation go hand
in hand. However, if you're
young and full of spunk, being
cast on MTV's The Real World
and Road Rules are slightly more
dignified than ending up on Joe
Millionaire 2 or Love Cruise: The
Maiden Voyage.
Every six months, the folks at
Bunim/Murray Productions are
on the prowl for new reality vic-
tims, and on Saturday they'll
hold open auditions in Dallas.
To give them some credit, they
at least had the balls to be inclu-
sive of queer cast members from
the very first season. And late
Real Worlder Pedro Zamora has
been one of the most effective
efforts of humanizing AIDS in
mainstream society. Since then,
however, it's been pretty much
downhill.
Without giving too much
away, casting director Jason
Horowitz offered some useful tips for gay
folks attending the Dallas cattle call. There are
13 slots available: Seven Real Worlders for sea-
son 15 and six Road Rulers for season 13. The
shows won't air until after the spring of 2004
and production locations haven't been dis-
closed yet.
Over 800 applicants, ages 18-24, are expect-
ed to attend the Dallas call. But Horowitz says
there will be 11 open calls held in other cities,
and with all the tape submissions, approxi-
mately 30,000 applicants will be vying for the
13 slots. With so many hopefuls in the running,
the idea is to make a strong and very good
impression.
At the open calls, applicants are normally
broken into group discussions that are led by a
casting director. And they're looking for
"interesting, dynamic and charismatic" indi-
viduals.
"Perhaps they're telling a different story
then we've heard before or they're coming
from a different perspective than we've seen.
But all the pieces have to fit together,"
Horowitz explains. "We've been doing this
long enough, and we can weed out the people

who are putting on a show or trying to steal
the attention from the others in the group."
With 30,000 people waiting to be screened,
Horowitz says salacious clowning is an imme-
diate turnoff. But the discussions usually shift
to intimate topics, and there's no time for folks
who are shy — especially about sexuality.
Horowitz acted as a liaison for the Chicago
cast, which had two gay roomies. But who
knows what in the hell the casting directors are
looking for. Horowitz says lesbian nudist
Aneesa rose to the top of the list because of her
unflinching openness. Sober gayboy (and
thumping bore) Chris was chosen for his
"level-headedness."
Bashful applicants are encouraged to make
video submissions that could perhaps grab a
casting director's undivided attention. After
the first cut, there's a three-month audition
process that follows with extensive back-
ground checks. If you do make it, be prepared
to sign an airtight contract that's notoriously
stingy and restrictive. ▼
