The campaign is starting to grow, Guerriero
said.
Earlier this week, he was in Sacramento talk-
ing with people who wanted the ads aired in
California. Log Cabin is also working to get the
ad on the air in Tennessee and Maryland.
Log Cabin is also delivering 1,000 copies of
the commercial to every GOP member of the
U.S. House and Senate, along with every
Republican governor and every member of the
Republican National Committee.
The campaign will also include print advertise-
ments.
Guerriero said the ad campaign will continue,
only if Log Cabin can raise the money to fund it.
Log Cabin wants to see the focus of the
Republican platfonn and the presidential debate
change from a “cultural war” to issues that mat-
ter, Guerriro said. He listed issues including the
economy, terrorism, national defense and better
schools.
Brian Welker of Dallas, treasurer of Log Cabin
Republicans of Texas, said Guerriero’s visit was
a great opportunity for people to talk face-to-face
with their leader.
Welker praised the group’s ad campaign. He
said it used the Vice President’s own words to
spread the message embraced by gay
Republicans.
Guerriero will be in Dallas for a 6 p.m. recep-
tion on March 27 at the Trammell & Margaret
Crow Collection of Asian Art, 2010 Flora St.
Cost is $75.
COOK

does its ministry.”
White Rock Community Church has called
two pastors since Cook’s resignation. The first,
the Rev. James Simmons, was revealed to be a
former San Antonio youth counselor who disap-
peared 17 years earlier. He claimed to be suffer-
ing from amnesia. He was removed by a congre-
gational vote.
The second pastor, the Rev. James Walker, still
leads White Rock Community Church.
Several members said that Simmons’ rejection
renewed old resentments about Cook’s resigna-
tion. They claimed that members of the congre-
gation and staff who disliked Cook caused him to
leave the church he founded.
Cook denied that dissension caused him to
leave White Rock Community Church. He said
that he left Dallas for a “new experience.”
“1 had accomplished all I had set out to accom-
plish at White Rock,” said Cook. Under the
founder’s guidance, the church grew from an ini-
tial seven people to a congregation several hun-
dred members strong.
Fonner White Rock Community Church
administrator Tom Porter said that he and many
others missed Cook and his style of ministry.
They are celebrating Cook’s return.
“I think it is wonderful,” said Porter, who left
White Rock Community Church after Simmons
was voted out as senior pastor. “Ever since I left
White Rock I’ve kind of been out in left field as
regards the type of church I like to go to.”
Porter said that under Cook’s leadership.
White Rock Community Church was the “first
church where I felt at home with the style of wor-
ship that was offered.”
The past five years have amounted to a peri-
patetic existence for Cook, who said he spent the
time in Phoenix, Seattle and Virginia. He started
a new gay church in Phoenix and lived there for
two years before moving to Seattle, where he
spent two years as pastor of an established gay
church.
Tire pastor, who led White Rock Community
Church for eight years, spent the last year in
Virginia living with family members. He taught
and conducted bible study while there.
Two months ago, he underwent triple bypass
surgery after doctors told him that he suffered
from three nearly blocked arteries.
“1 guess having the bypass surgery made me
want to get a little closer to home than I was,”
Cook said.
Cook said that he has come to consider Dallas
home because of the large number of friends he
has living here. He visited Dallas about six weeks
ago and attended services at White Rock
Community Church and another small church
originally fonned by fonner White Rock church
members. Faith Community Church.
“I didn’t decide until a month ago that this was
where I needed to be.”
Cook said that while he was away, he missed
Dallas.’ GLBT community and everything it has
to offer.
“Most importantly, 1 missed the spiritual
yearning of this great community,” Cook said.
