High <ourt hears sodomy challenge
Lambda Legal Defense attorneys,
Harris County District Attorney
square off before Supreme Court
By Dennis Vercher
Senior Editor
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The attorney for
two Texas men asked the U.S. Supreme Court
on Tuesday to declare the state's "homosexu-
al conduct law" invalid.
But Paul M. Smith went beyond the Texas
law, seeking the court's declaration that all
sodomy laws violate the Constitution, a
request that sparked a lively discussion
among the justices.
At stake were the convictions of two
defendants — John Geddes Lawrence, 60, and
Tyron Garner, 37 — whom police discovered
having anal sex in Lawrence's northwest
Harris County apartment. Under broader
review was the courtis 1986 ruling in Bowers v.
Hardwick establishing the right of states to
regulate private, consensual same-gender sex,
a ruling widely reviled in the gay and lesbian
community.
Smith told the court that the law was an

under review by the U.S. Supreme Court. The case revolves around the arrests of
two Houston men in 1998 whom Harris County Sheriff's deputies discovered
engaged in anal sex in a private bedroom while responding to a false 911 call.
Dell pulls Savage ads
Texas computer company reacts to controversy surrounding tv host
By Angela Geralds
Staff Reporter
A spokesperson for Austin-based Dell
Computer Corporation said the company's
decision not to advertise during Michael
Savage's MSNBC talk show was "purely a
business decision."
Because the company, like many national
brands, spends little money each year on tele-
vision advertising, it looks for the most effec-
tive, most efficient ways to reach all its cus-
tomers, said Dwayne Cox, of Dell.
"I cannot stress 'all' (customers) enough,"
he said.
MSNBC decided, in February, to give
radio DJ Michael Savage, host of "The Savage
Nation," his own television program, which
began in early March.
Savage, dubbed a shock-jock by some, is
known for his strong presentation of ultra-
conservative views. The Gay and Lesbian
Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has
taken issue with many of his views, denounc-
ing Savage and attempting to educate adver-
tisers and the public about Savage's message
Dell initially learned of the controversy
surrounding Savage Nation from a national
news source that contacted the company.
The spokesperson from the news outlet
had apparently seen the show, Cox said, and
learned of an outside organization's efforts to
launch a campaign combating Savage's
