Tirs great abundance of roses
now blooming in Brownsville
reminds one oS the suggestion

Longevity appears to be
one of the characteristics of the
Mexican people frequent ex
amples of great age amongst
them being cited An Eagle
Pass dispatch dated last Fri-
day says Bla Lopez aged
107 years died today in Pie
dras Negras lie leaves a
widow aged 102 years The
papers are constantly mention-
ing cases of Mexicans dying
at an even greater age than
that of the one mentioned in
the foregoing As they are no-
tably a frugal people living
chieily on corn or maize it is
probable that this may explain
the cause at least in part of
their living to such a good old
age
The Greenville Herald states
a sound truth in the following
In some of the best and most
fertile sections of the south the
country roads are almost im-
passable during the wet season
If the time spent in discussing
the politicalcnestions and solv
ing the financial problem was
devoted to the creation of good
roads thousands of dollars in
taxes and war and tear on

GREATEST FOREST
It appears that Siberia from
the plaiu of the Obi River on
the wesc to the valley of the
Indighirka on the east is one
great timber belt averaging
more than 1000 miles in
breadth from north to south
being fully 170 miles wide in
the Yenisei district and hav-
ing a length from east to west
of about 5000 miles Uulike
equatorial forests the trees of
the Siberian tiagas are mainly
codifers comprising pines of
sevsral varieties firs and lar-
ches In the Yenisei Lena and
Olenek regions there are thou
sands of square miles where no
human being has ever been
The longstemmed codifers rise
to a height of 150 feet and
stand so closely together that
that walking among them is
difficult
The dense lofty tops exclude
the pale Arctic sunshine and
the straight pale trunks all
looking exactly alike so be-
wilder the eye in the obscurity
that all sense of direction is
lost Even the most experienc-
ed trappers of sable dare not
venture into the dense tiagas
without taking the precaution
of blazing the trees constant-
ly with hatchets as they walk
forward If lost there the hunt-
er rarely finds his way out
but perishes miserabl3r from
starvation and cold The nat-
ives avoid the tiagas and have
a name for them which signifies
places where the mind is lost
