3IE WITH DOUBLES
Confusion Caused by Them in An-
cient afld 3fodern li istQry
Philadelphia Record
It is the fate of many distinguish
edpersons to have their doubles
So far as similar names are concern
ed most students of history are aware
of the inconvenieuce tliat tlie Great-
er Ajax had to put up with from the
Lesser and from an historical point
of view neither tho elder nor the
younger Agrippina has always come
by her own The average school-
boy still refuses to recognize the
fact that there were two possibly
three apostles called James as well
as the two Judases Perhaps more-
over it is a social blessing in dis-
guise that not everybody knows
there were two Socrates two Platos
and even uvo Yirgils But such is a
fact none tho less
Eveh right here at homo in these
more modern times a small person
with a large name has occasionally
cropped up to the confusion of tho
more distinguished owner or that
name And as history shall progress
these instances will probably bo
largely multiplied since there is a
tendency among persons having a
surname in common with some
great man to inflict upon their male
offspring the distinguished mans
given name also It would be inter-
esting for instance to know how
many youthful Thomas Jcffersons
Abraham Lincolns aud so forth there
are in the land today any one of
whom by some more or less brilliant
achievement may have his name
emblazoned on tho roll of history
and thus in tho far future his glory
may be intermixed with that of tho
illustrious personage for whom he
was named Such occurrences are
not uncommon even in modern
days Tor example the names of
the two Pitt havo been used as in-
terchangeable terms to say nothing
of the elder and younger Dumas and
tjie two Robespierres Only a few
daysago an enterprising writer mix-
ed up the name of Mr Gully the
new speaker of tho British hou e of
commons with that of Mr Gully an
expugilist To this re ckless scribe
these two Gullys wero one and tho
same individual
All of this is very perplexing io
be sure But how much more so
must be the case of two contempora-
ries who though differing in name
areexactly similar in stature and
feature tho less distinguished one
going so far as to modehis style of
dress upon the fashion followed by
his enviable double One often
hears of such cases There is a man
in Washington today who so closely
resembles the president that he has
been frequently taken for MrCleo
land even by intimate friends of tfio
latter Then again there is a dou-
ble of Mr Chauncey M Dopew
who the double not tho genial
postprandial orator frequents tho
Bowery quarter of Now York and
poses as Mr Depew in places where
that gentleman would havo Tery
grave misgivings as to the moral
propriety of risking his presence In
viow of such occurrence current
history occasionally gets slightly
mixed Could there be much
wonder then if the historians four
or five generations henco should go
wrong
Little elso than confusion from
tho exitence or doubles is to be
expected Were man not a gregari-
ous animal the result might be dif-
ferent But the fact that he is a gre-
garious aniiiMl and a = > such is liable
to a name often bestowed in com-
mon upon his fellows aud features
as frequently similar seems to bo a
little eccentricity on the part of the
great law of nature the keynote of
whose platform is tho reverse of con-
fusion
