Our Neighbor State Rich in
Coal and Iron The Bar
roteran Road
A correspondent of the Mon
terey Times writes a follows
regarding the Mexican state of
Tanianlipas
Iron ore is well distributed
throughout this state There
are rich deposits of it in the
San Carlos San Nicolas and
San Jose districts These dis-
tricts are situated in groups of
small mountains in the south-
western portion of the state
The ore in many places crops
out on the surface but as
there has not been any effort
made to develop them very
little is known how far the ore
extends into the mountains nor
the quality of the iron But
there are some prospects of
that being done in the near
future as the Monterey Gulf
railroad which connects Mon-
terey with Tampico passes
through those districts and
since It was opened for traffic
in October 18B1 rich coal-
mines have been discovered in
close proximity to those dis
tricts
There is not another state
in the Republic that is so rich
in coal as Taraaulipas Coal
is found to underlie the surface
from Columbia on the Rio
Grande where it joins Nuevo
Leon until it reaches Rionosa
on the lower Rio Grande and
then south to the San Carlos
San Nicolas and San Jose dis-
tricts and along the northern
and the eastern bonndaty of
the state of Nuevo Leon
Edmond was given samples
of the coal in 3875 which was
found cropping out on the sur-
face in front of the city of Mier
and in front of Romp Texas
and took them to Galveston
and had them on exhibition
in the office of the Galveston
News The coal dealers in that
city pronounced them equal to
any soft coal then in the
market In October 1SS1 I
gathered specimens of coal at
Nuevo Laredo and Guerrero
and took them to Galveston
and lTouston and hal them
examined by experts and they
pronounced them equal to any
of the English and Pittsburg
soft coal that was then for sale
in those cities Last winter
Sr Gonzalez of this city had
some specimens of coal from
new mines he discovered and
which were pronounced by ex-
perts to be equal if not sup-
erior to the Indian territory
coal
In 1SS1 Jay Gould and as-
sociates started to build a rail-
road through those coal fields
from Nuevo Laredo to Yictoiiaj
the capital of the state Ihey
graded 110 miles of the road
built station houses and offices
at Nuevo Laredo and a bridge
across the Rio Grande and laid
about three miles of track tnlt
for some cause they abandoned
it Some jears afterward they
sold the building BitFria d
