THE CIRCUS
lu various ways Che circus of
the present day differs from
that of the past lint the ring
remains unohangedit is always
forty two feet nine inches in
diatnater Go where you will
search the world from China to
Peru with diverging trips to
the frosty Caucasus and the
Desert of Sahara and never a1
circus will you lind without a
ring forty two feet nine inches
in diameter
There is a reason for this re-
markable nnfonuity Circus
riders and circus horses are
nomadic wherever their wan-
derings bringthem they must
j iind the ring alwaS the same
else ihej will be disturbed in
their performance if not really
rendered incapable Trained
to the fortytwo foot nine inch
ring the horse and his rider
have grown used worn one
might say to the exact angle
of declivity toward the center
of the ring which the radius of
twentyone feet and a given
opeed produce
The mound on the circumfer-
ence of the ring always has on
the inside a level so to speak
of earth at the same angle as
that into which radius and
speed throw the driver As
fop speed that after the horse
Has gone round two or three
times and 13 warmed to his
work is the same through the
act In fact a strap generally
liolds his head so that he can-
not get bejond a certain pace
The ringmaster snaps his
wliip the clown shouts the
band plays louder and louder
Tiut the horse knows just how
much this empty show means
and jogs along at the same old
pace until with the last jnTip
through a tissue balloon the
act Is ended Pittsburg Dis-

COLLEGEBRED FARMERS
Florida Citizen
One of the indications that scienti
fic farming is to be more generally
practiced is that many college gra
duates are now adopting farming as
an occupation in preference to at
lompting to making a living in the
overcrowded professions The At
lanta Journal says
Tho idea thala professional life
or a commercial career is the natural
destiny of our collegebred men ha
caused tho waste of an untold amount
of energy and the wreck ef mana
man who either attempted something
for which he was not suited or went
down in the maelstrom of fast city
life Xo nobler occupation can be
found than farming none which af
fords a better chance for a happy
independent and useful life A boy
should think over tho matter well
before ho makes up his mind to
leave tho fafm to try to make his
fortune or his famo in town
The situation applies with special
forco to the south and to southern
yonng men for hero farming i
practically in its infancy Tho times
too are favorable for the profes
sions are crowded and the commercial
avenues aro full In casting about
for a pleasant and profitable occupa-
tion tho collegebred young man
can not do better than io try farm
ing He who shall iipplv scientific
principles to the cultivation of such
soil as aboundsin Florida will sure-
ly succeed
