capital has been somewhat
slow in advancing railroad
building While tho amount
of new track laid for the past
twelve months aggregated only
about 1800 miles the lowest
point in twenty years Texas
headed the list with 22i mile
of new railroad to her credit
While the past year has not
been a very prosprous one
with the Texas roads owing to
the short cotton crop in th
h rst place and then again the
numerous rate wars and contin-
ual disturbance of tariffs rail-
road construction has progress-
ed steadily and the prospects
for a continuance of tho work
in this line for the cominir y ar
are very favorable Already
nearly 000 miles of new track
are projected and building has
been commenced That tin
States 0000 miles of railway
will bi increased nrarly an-
other thousand before the ex
piratirtn of the present 3ear
there is every indication but
the outlook for freight and
passenger traffic during the
first six months of 1S9G is
anything but encouraging Yet
it must be remembered that
upon the crops depend largely
the revenue of the railroads
audit is yet loo early to ad-
vance a predict ion of the re-
sults of tips yenrs planting
Should the cotton and grain
crops of the fouilry be good
the summer and fall business
of tile road will sJmw a conns
