Scout's Eagle project
is for the birds
By Jennifer Fike
Stalf Writer
news @ csmediatexas. com
Ted Campbell, a junior al
Lovejoy High School, has been
in Scouting for seven years, first
as a Webelo and then as a Boy
Scout.
At 16, he is now working to
achieve Eagle Scout status, the
highest rank a Scout can receive.
As it came time for him to plan
his Eagle Project, Ted, part of
Troop 358, took the title literal-
ly. He chose to help eagles and
their bird kin at the Blackland
Prairie Raptor Center.
"There are a number of
requirements thlit need to be
achieved in order to obtain this
rank," Ted said, "and one impor-
tant requirement is the comple-
tion of the Eagle Project.
"This project must be
planned, coordinated and car-
ried out by the Scout and must
be beneficial to a religious insti-
tution, a school, the community,
or be a conservation project ben-
efiting the environment," Ted
said.
Since the Blackland Prairie
Raptor Center is in the process
of opening a facility in
Brockdale Park in Lucas, there
was a lot of work to be done.
Many Scouting groups have vol-
unteered their time al the center,
but when the center's Executive
Director Erich Neupert found
out Ted was looking for an
Eagle Project, he gave him a
very special mission.
"My project was to construct
and install on the western shore
of Lake Lavon (on the grounds
of the center) two nesting plat-
forms designed for either
ospreys or eagles," Ted said.
Ted found plans for the plat-
forms online and modified them
to work for his specific project.
Using pressure-treated lumber
and zinc-plated hardware, Ted
constructed two seven-foot
square platforms, with addition-
al perches extending from the
nesting box and pole.
For maximum height, the
nests were then attached to tele-
phone poles which were donated
by Oncor. Oncor also provided
the equipment and truck needed
to install the poles once Ted's
platforms had been built.
After installation, Ted cleared
the brush and trees away from
the area so that the center's staff
could observe the nests. In total,
it took Ted 70 hours to prepare
the platforms.
"1 completed the project in
June, too late lor the 2009 nest-
ing season for the eagles and
ospreys," Ted said. "However I
have high hopes for this coming
spring when two 'ready-made'
nests will be available for some
happy pair to occupy."
