THE TYLER tOVRUXl
I"1 —
By the term pneumonia, we mean
disease producing an inflammation of
lung tissue. It may be due to different
causes, however as commonly seen it
is produced by some type of pneumo-
coccus. Certain other types of bacter-
ia, such as typhoid bacilli, strepto-
cocci, plague bacilli may produce
pneumonia, but they are uncommon
\ It
The disease may be urimary, acc-
curing suddenly in apparently heal-
thy and normal individuals, or may
be secondary—following colds, influ-
enza and other upper respitatory in-
fections.
It is the most preventable and fatal
of all accute diseases. As a cause of
death it reVals and sometimes ex-
ceeds tuberculosis. Ten per cent
of deaths from all causes in the U. S.
from 1900 to 1920 were due to pneu-
monia. It occurs in all climates hut
shows a distinct seasonal prevalence,
being more frequent in the winter
end spring months.
It attacts all ages being more fre-
quent in both extremes of lige. Osier
spoke of pneumonia as “the friend
of the aged'', however it often attacks
the strong and robust.
It does not ordinarily seem to he
a contageous disease although it is
spread rather directly from man to
man. The germ , does not thrive out-
side the human body and man must
necessarily serve as a source and
reservoir for its spread. The germ
may be present in the nose and throat
of apparently normal people without
producing- the disease. Fatigue, ex-
posure, dissipation, unbalanced diet,
loss of sleep, worry, lack of exer-
cise, poor ventilation, colds, etc. may
lower the body resistance, permitting
the development of the disease.

Austin, M«rch 14.—Extensive kill-
ing of hawks was condemned today
bv the Wildlife Division of the Na-
tional Palnk' Service, which described
as “regrettable and alarming” the
spectacle of more than 100 dead
hawks strung by hunters along the
roadside fence near Mart, Texas.
Pointing out that only the so-called
“blue-darter” hawks are destructive,
while other varities arc “friends of
the farmer”, the statement said that
all birds identified in newspaper pho-
tographs of the Mart group are of
the beneficial species — “killed by
thoughtless, untrained men”.
Rarely in there opportunity to kill
“blue-darts”, it was said, because
that species — comparatively small,
with short rounded wings and long
tails—prefers foods or hickets from
which they make short, ' wift flights,
seizing their pr-y, and returning to
thicket conceal meat.
‘If you must sh i «t hawks,” bun-
tors are warnvt, “remember that
practically -.very large hawk you
see perched in the open or roaraig
on motionless wings is a friend of the
farmer and should be protected.
These hawks feed on mice, ground
squirrels, rabits, prarie dogs, and in
sects. This food preference has teen
demonstrated, many times through 'to
study of large numbers of bawls’
stomachs.”
