VERGING WAGES
ETais Republic
rageenrners who have sense
renongTi to come in out of the
wet are not fooled by Hannas
talk about less wages as a re-
sult of the impending Demo-
cratic victory The trusts and
combines that Hauna is work-
ing for have never been suspect-
ed of going into politics for the
purpose of raising the wages
they have to pay
The simple fact that Hanna
is for the single gold standard
ought to be good and sufficient
evidence that that financial
policy means lower wages for
all workmen in Hannas indus-
tries
That is exactly what it does
mean We had the unmitigated
single gold standard during the
panic times of 1873 78 when
the country was filled with
tramps who could get no wages
at all Then for twelve years
we had the single gold stand-
ard mitigated by the limited
though large coinage of legal
tender silver
Since 1893 we have had the
single gold standard mitigated
by the determination of a large
part of the country not to sub-
mit to it a day longer than
might be absolutely necessary
If MeKinley wins this fight
we go flat upon the single gold
standard unmitigated even by
any Tpasonable hope of relief
from any Bource That will
mean a fiual settling down to
gold prices in every branch of
industry and trade It will
mean wages to labor in this
country corresponding closely
to the wages given to the
pauper labor of gold stand-
ard Britain
But one of the very first ef-
fects of the iinal triumph of the
single gold standard in this
years election would be a
sharp cut in the wages of all
labor and the early bnginning
ef a readjustment of prices in
oiher industries besides agri-
culture
The single standard gold dol-
lar is a dear dollar the world
over The man who has it is go-
ing lo get something when he
parts with it
If MeKinley is elected thous-
ands of men who vote for liira
will in lss than three months
have the strongest kind of rea-
sons in their pocket for beg-
ging somebody to kick them
But McKinlej is not going to
be elected
It is not a favorable com
xueutary on the present ngn
that those wipers whose whims
moFt abound with attacks on
th i personal character of men
and women are most eagerly
sought nfter
Let Mark llatuta bring his
ban el of boodle to Texas The
money will be put in tirculu
tioji which will help some of
the poorer devils but Texas
will go democratic just the
ls says that he is for Rud
m first to last Every yoter
district knows what that means
era Record
It certainly means a great
deal in this congressional dis-
trict C G Caller
We can testify to that fact
Mr Wells is a gentleman who
is endowed with a wonderful
amount of personal magnetism
and once a friend always a
friend a perfect gentleman a
fine and impressive orator and
one of the brainiest men in
Texas and is hard to down on
the stump or at the bar It is
confidently hoped that two
years hence will reveal the
name of Hon James B Wells
as a candidate for congression-
al honors he ie capable em-
phatically so Goliad Guard
The Laredo Times says the
impression tas bpen formed
among many that Hon E A
Atlee was still a gold man and
would not support the Chicago
platform and nominees but he
said on yesterday that he had
not thought of doing otherwise
and last night enrolled himself
as a member of the Bryan and
Sewall CInb of Laredo and as
he has been nominated by the
democratic convention of this
senatorial district for rpelec
tion to the State senate his
name has been placed at the
masthead of the Times for that
office
The Hon Jas B Wells ban
been strongly urged to make a
number of speeches throughout
the interior of the state before
the election He has declined
to accept th invitations be-
lieving his quiet talks along
the Rio Grande will do more
good for his party than Fonrth
of July orations in the interior

will appear in the October Mc

A JAPANESE SPY FOUND
m CUBA
Made a Complete Report of
Conditions on the Island
New York Sfpt IS A dis-
patch to the World from
Havana say
EFOjiiel Murata a Japanese
doctor who came to Cnha a few
months ago ostensibly to iu
form himself on the sanitary
condition of the island has
proved to be a spy Hh was
so imprudent as to mail his
repori and it was seized and
delivfred over to Capt Gen
Weyl r On being translated
it proved to be a report to the
Japanese government on the
the military condition of the
island Murnia was looked for
too lalej he had already sailed
The report is a pliiii state
tnent of tin r ieds of the

the loyal troops number 147
000 of which there ire 7000
olliceys They hold the princi
pal cities and towns while the
rebels numbering 43000 in all jf
hold the woods bills and
plains It seems there is an
understanding between Weyler
and his soldiers to do no fight-
ing The former is too buny
making out his profits on big
contracts for supplying the
army with food and clothing to
attend to attend to military
operations He never goes out
of the city walls and is Cap
tainGeneral in name only act
ing as Governor in arresting
unarmed citizens and giving
out civil orders
The army is run on the
goasyou please plan Occas-
ionally the troops go scouting
and return having killed some
stray peasants They then make
out a false report of a supposed
fight with the object of getting
promotion Since the rebellion
started over 1700 promotions
have been made and about
8000 medals and decorations
awarded for supposed defeats
of the rebels nevertheless
these have continued unmo
lested their work of invasion
and destruction
The insurgentsas a military
organization are very deficient
They are poorly drilled badly
dressed and bad shooters
They avoid fighting but fight
desperately when forced to
In open battle they would meet
with sure defeat by the well
dressed Spanish soldiers but
their warfare is one of strategy
and tricks Wells are poisoned
also fruit and food Dynamite
is sowed broadcast Every
scheme is resorted except real
fighting
In veiw of ths state of
affairs we might without fear
accomplish the seizure of Phil
lipinejlslartds but uot by force
as did the French Jin Madagas
car but with tactics and un
derhand aiding of the natives
like the American SlatPS with
the Cuban rebels To avoid in-
ternational complications they
feign neutrality but secretly
aid the rebels in fighting the
Spaniards ready to step in and
annex the island at the proper
time Following the methods
of Americans we might easily
secure control of the Phillipine
Islands without bloodshed and
complications with Spain
Commenting on the above
the World says
Dr Murata came to America
with Yalatata last summer and
went direct to Cuba as stated
in the dispatch ostensibly to
study yellow fever He ex-
plained that it was of great
importance to Japan in view
of the fact that the disease
freqnently made its appearance
in Formosa In the beginning
Dr Muratas presence in Cuba
waB remarked by the Spanish
authorities with more or less
suspicion but nevertheless he
was treated with much courtesy
and afforded ever opportunity
to make observation

People coming in tonight on
the Silver City special report
that a troop of cavalry from
Fort Bayard left Deming N
M early this morning going
toward Palomas Mexican
officials here were highly pleas-
ed over this piece of news as
it indicated that the depart-
ment at Washington had de-
cided to take a hand in the
business
The three armed Mexicans
arrested while passing through
this city last night were to-
night taken charge of by a
United Statesmarshal and re
moved to the county jail could
tell on what charge the men
were being held and the Ex

Washington D C Sept
18 The anxiety and interest
displayed to hear Mr Bryan
speak here on Saturday after-
noon is without parallel not
being confined merely to his
political friends but embrac-
ing persons of all political
creeds this being the first time
in the history of the country
when a nominee for the Pres-
idency ever addressed a Wash-
ington audience pending the
canvass Applications for
seats are pouring in from all
quarters a large number of
requests being made by ladies
evidently attracted by the nov-
elty of the situation The seat-
ing capacity of the baseball
park will not suffice to accom-
modate a tithe of those who
ask for place The meeting
will necessarily be a large one
since the people from the
neighborhoods of Virginia
West Virginia and Maryland
will embrace the opportunity
to hear a presidential candi-
date orate on the issues of the
day
