With a large force on the Daues

It is rumored here that Capt
Gen Weyler will soon take
command of the Spanish forces
in Pinar del Rio with the in-
tention of expelling Maceo from
the province It is true hard
lighting is expected on account
of the strong positions held by
the insurgents
The Cuban chief has deter
mined to make any eacrih ca to
effect CnptGen Weylera cap-

It is reported that Maya Rod-
riguez with 1500 men form-
ing Gomezs vanguard crossed
the line recentlj and is now on

TOM SMITHS HOPES
Dallas Texas SeptlS The
Unwonted activity of thu Hon
Tom Smith of Hillsboro Speak-
er of the last Legislature re-
calls to mind that the gentle-
man has been slated as Attor
rie General Cranes successor
when the latter shall be elected
Governor Smith is a lawyer
at least there is a sign outuidn
his door which says he id Any-
how he has bowed to the Joss
and burned as much incense as
any idolator iu the moscjup so
there can be no quesion of his
qualifications for that or for any
other officii to which he may
aspire
Smith a short tlm ago aspir-
ed to Congress His aspiration
was born when talk of Barney
Gibbs asnhe Populist nominee
was begun The report fright-
ened the Democrats of the dis
triet for they appreciated hie
strength In looking around
for n David to this Golia h they
bethought themselves of Tom
Smith one of tlie liiost popular
Highest of all in Leavening Power Latest U S Govtj
the chism of the Joss In re when and where you Beem to
turn for submitting to bear this have a fair chance of convincing
mark Joss placed him down in the people you talk to
the book as next out fori And dont talk too much
AttorneyGeneral He was also Chicago Record
reminded that of late years the
AttorneyGeneralship bad been
the steppingstone to the Gov-
ernorship Smithwas immense-
ly pleased at this5 and since
that time he has nenrly suffo-
cated the Joss with incense
fumes
Indeed Smith haB been
stumbling all over himself to
throw bequets at Popocracy
At Fort Worth he placed the
Heroic Young Christian in nom
iuatiou It was rather a full
some eulogy and at times those
who were not idolators iu the
mosqtie showed signs of beoom1
ing sick in their midsts But
it was a good speech Every-
body in the hall heard it
Smiths frame shook and he
grew red in the face as wasj as
showing other signs of elo-
quence
However Smith was not con
teut with this effort He im-
mediately betook himself to the
stump and ever since he has
been declaiming about the
greatness of Dianna of the
Epheasians These speeches
have been awfully and wonder
fully
ture He has been extolling
the Joss and everything ele
Popocratic But he never quite
satisfied himself until the other
day while in a fevered flight if
red faced eloquence he declar-
ed the Chicago platform to be
the equal to the Declaration of
Independence Before this lit
terance he had been thought to
be very friendly to Thomas
Seffersons exposition of gov
eminental principles
SHOULD FRANKLIN
COME BACK
If good Beft Franklin were
back among us once more and
could take part iu the excite-
ments of the campaign it is safe
to say that he would approve
the publication of an appendix
to his Poor Richard aluiunac
The almanac would contaii a
raadt
as these
Never get into a political
dispute finless you see a chance
to make an effective point or a
convert to your own views
Never lose your tettiper in d
debate
Never berate yonr antagon-
ists and call his fiiinds names
wliile at the anrn time you are
trying to persuade him
When talking about finance
use facts eschew generalities
and rhetoric Fk It nt LlrJTnlo a ranch ft

politics it does no good and watqied and IU abnntlaiKo of
to quote scrip
men in this district The bUL i number of such timely advice
geslion that he be rt candidate
accorded with Smiths ambition
but there tana a draw back It
was his alliance with the Joss
It will be remembered the
last Legislature was not very
much beloved of the Heroic
Young Chiistinn nor was it
much enamored of him In-
deed the Ueroic Young Chris-
tian coul 1 not control it and
he had leeourse to Totii Smith
whose pobition and personal
populaiily made him a valuable
assistant All the Josses be
