TONCERinNG WAGES
st Louis Republic
Wageearnera who have sense
enough to come in out of the
wet are not fooled by Hannas
talk about less wages as a re-
sult of the impending Demo-
cratic victory The trusts and
combines that Hanna is work-
ing for have never been snspect
ed of going into politics for the
purpose of raising the wages
they have to pay
The simple fact that Hanna
is for the siDgle gold standard
ought to be good and sufficient
evidence that that financial
policy means lower wages for
all workmen in Hannas indns
tries
That is exactly what il does
mean We had the unmitigated
single gold Btandard during the
panic times of 187378 when
the country was filled with
tramps who could get no wages
at all Then for twelve yenrs
we had the single gold stand-
ard mitigated by the limited
though large coinage of legal
Sender 6ilver
Since 1893 we have had the
single gold standard mitigated
by the determination of a large
part of the country not to sub-
mit to it a day longer than
jniglit be absolutely necessary
If McKinley wills this fight
we go flat upon the single gold
standard unmitigated even by
any reasonable hope of relief
frdm any source That will
mean a final settling down to
gold prices in every branch of
indttstry and trade It will
mean wages to labor in this
country corresponding closely
to the wages given to the
pauper labor of gold stand-
ard Britain
But one of the very first ef-
fects of the final triumph of the
single gold standard in this
years election would be a
sharp cut in the wages of all
labor and the early beginning
of a readjustment of prices in
other industries besides agri-
culture

A JAPANESE SPY FOUND
IN CUBA
Made a Complete Report of
Conditions on the Island
New York Sept18 dis-
patch To The World from
Havana eaysf
Esquiel Murata a taparfece
doctor who came to Cuba a few
months ago ostensibly to in
form himself on the sanitary
condition of the island has
proved to be a spy He waB
so impmdefrt as to mail bis
report and it was seized and
delivered over to Capt Gen
Weyler On being translated
it proved to be a report to the
Japanese government on the
the military condition of th
island WunWa was looked fnf
toolatehe had already sailed
The report is a plain state
inrrl of the jRoitraa of the
Cuban revolutionaccompanied
loyal troop
up as fol lownf
by the rebels and
flit loy l troops number 147

rebels numbering43000 in all
hold the woods bills and
plains It seems there Is an
understanding bstween Weyler
and his soldiers to do no fight-
ing The former Ib too busy
making out his profits on big
contracts for supplying the
array with food and clothing to
attend to attend io military
operations He never goes out
of the city walls and ib Cap
tainGeneral in name only act-
ing as Governor in arresting
unarmed citizens and giving
out civil orders
The army is run oti the
goasyou please plan Occas-
ionally the troops go scouting
and return having killed some
stray peasants They then make
out a false report of a supposed
fight with the object of getting
promotion Since the rebellion
started over 1700 promotions
have been made and about
8000 medals and decorations
awarded for supposed defeats
of the rebels nevertheless
these have continued unmo-
lested their work of invasion
and destruction
The insurgents as a military
organization are very deficient
They are poorly drilled badly
dressed and bad shooters
They avoid fighting but fight
desperately when forced to
In open battle they would meet
with sure defeat by the well
dressed Spanish soldiers but
their warfare is one of strategy
and tricks Wells are poisoned
also fruit and food Dynnmile
is sowed broadcast Every
Bcherae is resorted except real
lighting
In veiw of tha otate of
affairs we might without fear
accomplish the seizure of Phil-
ippine Islands but not by force
as did the French Jin Madagas-
car but with tactics and an
derhand aiding of the nalives
like the American Slates with
the Cuban rebels To avoid in-
ternational complications they
feign neutrality but secretly
aid the rebels in fighting the
Spaniards ready to step in and
annex the island at the proper
time Following the methods
of Americans we might easily
secure control of the Phillipine
Islands withont bloodshed and
complications with Spain
Commenting on the above
the World says
Dr Murata came a America
with Yalatata last summer and
went direct to Cuba as stated
in the dispatch ostensibly to
stndy ellow fever He ev
plained that it was of great
importance to Japan in view
of the fact that the disease
frequently made its appearance
in Formosa In the beginning
Dr Mnratas presence in Cuba
was remarked by the Spanish
authorities with rfiora or less
suspicion but nevertheless he
was treated with much courtesy
and afforded every opportunity
to make observations

displayed to hear Mr Bryan
speak here Ofi Saturday after-
noon is without parallel not
being confined merely to his
political friends but embrac-
ing persons of all political
creeds this being the first time
in the history of the country
when a nominee for the Pres-
idency ever addressed a Wash-
ington audience pending the
canvass Applications for
seats are pouring in from all
quarters a large number of
requests being made by ladies
evidently attracted by the nov-
elty of the situation The seat-
ing capacity of the baseball
park will not suffice to accom-
modate a tithe of those who
ask for place The meeting
will necessarily be a large one
since the people from the
neighborhoods of Virginia
West Virginia and Maryland
will embrade the opportunity
to hear a presidential candi-
