The report of the Mexican
National railroad for the month
of August just issued from the
presidents office here today
says a New York special to the
New Orleans TimeaDemocrat
is a valuable contribution to
the literature of the silver ques-
tion and is a complete refuta-
tion of many of the assertions
and arguments advanced by
the antisilver orators in the
present presidential campaign
The comparative statement of
the gross earnings of the Mex-
ican National which operates
over a thousand miles of road
shows that while many of the
American roads have gone into
receivers hands or passed their
dividends the Mexican trunk
line lias actually iqcreased its
earnings over the last year
more than 10 per cent and this
too is the dullest season of the
year Curiously enough the
Mexican National has been
quoted by gold orators as an
illustration of what will hap-
pen to American roads if a free
silver policy prevails in the
United States and a corres
pondent of the St Lcuis Globe-
D cnocrat now traveling in
Mexico devotes considerable
apace in the side lights of the
r
subject Before commenting
further on the facts of the case
it is perhaps best to introduce
here the comparative state-
ment of estimated gross earu
ings of the Mexican National
as furnished this afternoon to
the Times Democrat corres-
pondent by President Wm Gr
Raoul
For Uih fonrth week of An
gust 1S90 the earnings were
6135410 as against 113247
for the same week last year
an increasu of 21G9 or over
30 per cent For the Tour weeks
of Augnst 1896 the earnings
were 395715 as against S345
C29 for the same period last
year an increase of 51086 or
nearly 14 per cent The signifi
cauce of this statement is not
ao much in the gross earnings
lmt in the
Increase as compar-
ed with last year of over 10
per cent and this in the dullest
period of the hard times when
American roads are thankful if
they can pay opernting ex-
penses only President Raotil
is an ardent free silver man
and commenterd at some length
to the Times Democrat corres
p indent on the comparative
statement in question as throw-
ing much light and actual data
on the free silver discussion
now going on the United States
I need hardlysay to you
fhat we are delighted with the
showing of our road bafd Mr
llauul The gold campaign
orators are holding up Mnxiuo
as silver ridden country and
trying to make out that her
people are worse glFthau ever
ar below the condition
Americano The AugHBt
ement of our road Bbows
at these same orators are
talking through their hats We
are enjoying a full measure of
prosperity while American
roads are complaining bitterly
of the hard times and often-
times passing their dividends
Indeed some of them cannot
escape receivers hands It is
a great mistake to depreciate
and denounce the Mexican dol-
lar It should be remembered
that after the civil war the
Mexican dollar was worth three
cents more than the American
dollar The fall in silver has
proved a godsend to Mexico
and has not been the curse that
the gold campaign orators try
to make out Io 1890 prior to
the closing of the Indian mintsv
silver was high and hence a
hundred dollars in gold would
not buy more than 120 Mexican
silver dollars Now however
the Mexican merchant can ex-
change the hundred gold dol-
lars received iu payment of ex-
ports and get double the quau
tity of Mexican dollars
The upshot of all this has
been practically to put a big
bonus on exports and ope
would think it would have serv-
ed to put an embargo on im-
ports Everybody made it a
point to rake and scrape to
gether everything exportable
in order to double his money
Business has been stimulated
right along and every line of
commerce has shown great
activity ever since Instead of
imports falling off they con-
tinued the same despite the
increased cost of articles Peo
pie made money and hence
they could a fford to pay the
higher prices The effect of
this was to keep up the gov
renments revenues and pre-
vent them from running be-
hind and at the same time
give many luxnries to the
richer classes It is another
great mistake to charge that
the wages of Mexican workmen
are regulated by the price of
silver Campaign orators of
the goldbngs say that the fall-
ing price of silver has brought
about lower wages This is
not only untrue but actually
absurd The wages of work-
men in Mexico ar < regulated
by the law of supply and de-
mand and are not in the least
affected by the price of si It er-
As a matter of fact wages ar
the wine today that they have
always been The changing
and appreciating value of the
gold dollar has served to throw
sanGin the eyes of thegold hug
stump speakers If a Mexican
artisan is intelligenuand in
riusirious he can make a great
deal more than the otdinary
workman in the mines or the
man that depends on his spade
ani muscle W find it to the
interest of our company to do
all our repairing and building
of cars in Mexico Our shops

silver has proved and is prov-
ing a blessing to him in more
ways than one Mark my
words the United States will
come to a silver baBis sooner
or later To postpone the qnes
tion now is only to tie down
the safety valve If free silver
dont come by naturaljevolution
it will by unnatural revolution
The whole world will sooner
or later have to come to a
larger use of silver and this
means the United States I do
not know whether or not Bryan
will be elected president but
I do know that he will be either
elected or defeated by a large
majority Things are in a
mighty abnormal conditionand
no one can predict what is go
ing to happen next November
One thing I do know Mexican
merchants do not want to see-
the United States go on a silver
basis Mexico has a good thing
as matters are now and she
dont want to share the silver
pudding with the people on the
north of her Free silver is a
blessing to any community or
country and the United States
will find this fact out sooner
or latter I am as sure of this
as I live

A CABLE TO BRYAN
New York Sept 20 The
World tomorrow will print a
special cablegram from Buda-
pest Hungary which says
The following cable mes
sage signed by delegates to
the international agricultural
congress called at Budapest
by the Hungarian minister of
agriculture hasbeen sent to
the democratic candidate for
president of the United States
To Hon W J Bryan
Democratic Headquarters
Chicago We the undersign-
ed members of the internation-
al agricultural congress con-
vened at Budapest wish you
success in your struggle
against the domination of the
creditor class which during
the past twentythree years
has secured both in America
and Europe monetary legisla
tion destructive of the prosper-
ity of your farmers and others
Should you be victorious in
November we pledge our-
selves to spare no efforts to
bring immediate pressure upon
our respective governments to
cooperate with the govern-
ment of your great nation in
restoring silver to the words
currency
We believe that
such restoration the gold
premium throughout all
Asia and South America
will continue to rob tl o
farmer equally of America
and of Europe of all re-
wards for his toil and your elec-
tion may avert from Europe
serious agrarian and social
troubles now pending
