District 6
Cancer Meet
Refugio. — District Six An-
nual Meeting of the American
Cancer Society, Texas Division,
Inc., was held in Beeville, Texas,
Wednesday, October 2, 1963, from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the
Beeville Country Club. The Biee
County Chapter, of the American
Cancer Society, acted as host to
the meeting.
District 6 consists of 19 south
Texas Counties, from Aransas
County west to Wfebb, and all
south of this line, and represen-
tatives were present from practi-
cally each of these 19 counties.
Average attendance was about firve
from each County in the District,
with a total of approximately 125
persons present for this meeting.
Some of the delegates came from
as far as 200 miles. In attendance
also were some six doctor, these
coming from as far as Harlingen,
Texas.
District Directors of the past
year consisted of Byran Finley,
Harlingen, Mrs. Nelson P. Wim-
berly, McAllen, and Sherman T.
Coleman, M.D., Corpus Christi,
Texas.
New directors elected for the en-
suing year were Dr. George Schus-
ter, of Corpus Christi, Dr. Wreathy
Aiken of A-&I College, in Kings-
ville, and Mrs. Paul Veale, Mc-
Allen, Texas.
In the featured address, Irbing
Rimer of New York, Assistant
Vice President for Public Educa-
tion and Information, of the Na-
tional Society, advised the dele-
gates that the big problem is
“to get people to take advantage
of what we now know and that
one half the people now getting
cancer will survive the disease if
they will act sooner.” Succesful
Cancer Control begins With suc-
cessful functioning committees
and boards, the delegates were
told. Highlighting the subject of
“Better Committee Organization”
was a presentation and discussion
on how to change people’s habits.
'Representatives from Refugio
County Chapter, American (Can-
cer Society, attending the District
meeting consisted of Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Heard, L. E. Weber, M. C.
Schubert, and Fred Johnson.
The Refugio Chapter, American
Cancer Society, m|eets every first
Thursday in the month, in the Ci-
ty Hall. It is enjoying some very
interesting and educational talks
and film showings and wishes to
extend a very sincere invitation to
each person to attend the regu-
lar meetings in Refugio.
Very soon a very interesting
film will be shown. It is hoped,
on several occasions locally, con-
cerning smoking. It is a film that
each person should make it a point
to see and give some thought con-
cerning same.
Girl, Boy
Scout Work
Told Club
Refugio. — The Mother’s Club
of Our Lady of (Refuge School met
Friday, October 4 at school. Msgr.
W. H. Oberste opened the meet-
ing and introduced Father Celes-
tine Murray. Mrs. A. B. Contre-
ras gave the treasurer’s report
and new members of the Mother's
Club were introduced.
Mrs. Douglas Whitlow announc-
ed the activities of the Girl Scouts
and introduced Mrs. Elton
F. Chedville, as her assistant. She
will also be assisted by Phoebe
Moore. Phoebe was made a coun-
cilor and will be assisting with the
Brownies. The Girl Scouts will
sponsor the annual Halloween Car-
nival and Tamale Supper Thurs-
day, October 31. Rides will be pro-
vided for the Carnival. The Girl
Scouts Will baby sit for mothers
who wish to attend Mothers’ Club
meetings.
Mrs. Charles Kret gave a report
on Boy Scout activities for her
husband, Scoutmaster Charles
Kret, and announced that Boy
Scout demonstrations will be held
at the Refugio County Fair
Grounds Saturday, October 12 be-
tween 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The
Boy Scouts will also march in the
parade Thursday, October 10.
A report of the Catholic Youth
Organization meeting held in Bee-
ville Sunday was given by Mrs.
Hughes Moore.
Father Murray gave a talk and
remarked he was well pleased
with attendance at Mothers’ Club
and that he was glad to be in
this parish.
It was announced that First
Communion Sunday is October 27,
Feast of Christ the King. Sister
Fabian’s room won the room
count.
Hostesses were Mrs. John Borg-
lund, Mrs. Richard Heard, Mjrs.
Herbert Dunlap and Mrs. Frank
B. Rooke, EU. They served cof-
fee, cake, nuts and candy from a
table decorated with a cornucopia
filled with autumn leaves and
fruit, in autumn colors.

Oriental Luncheon
Honors Rushees of
Beta Sigma Phi
Refugio. —i The local Chapter of
Beta Sigma Phi Sorority honored
the Fall Rushees with an Orien-
tal luncheon at the home of Mrs.
Frances Hounsell Saturday af-
ternoon, October 5. Mrs. Houn-
sell’s home was decorated in Or-
iental fashion with (China geisha
dolls centering the individual tab-
les, Chinese lanterns hung from
the ceiling and one wall was cen-
tered with a silk screen with a
Chinese vessel on it. Chinese men-
us were on each table as well as
fortune matches and paper drag-
ons.
Mrs. Hounsell served! shrimp
with sauce and fortune tooth picks,
chop suey, noodles, rice, green on-
ions, tea, and Mandarin dessert
with almond cookies.
The rushees attending were Mrs.
Margie Woodward, Mrs. Elaine
Williams, Mrs. Annette Gilbreath,
and Mrs. Lee Mpses, wjho is a
Beta Sigma Phi from Magnolia,
Arkansas.
Games were played and prizes
won by Mrs. Elaine Williams, Mrs.
Jo Davenport, Mrs. Lee Moses,
Mrs. Bobbye Waggoner and Mrs.
La Juana Rogers.
Mrs. Paige Bums was elected
princess of Beta Sigma Phi Soror-
ity last week succeeding Mrs.
Carolyn McNeely who recently
moved.
Mrs. Burns is the Wife of Bert
Burns, who is employed by W, H.
Crawford Construction Co. They
have two children, Susan, 2 years,
and Michael, 4 years.
She has been a Sorority mem-
ber about two years. Her hobby
is sewing. She is a memlher of
the Methodist Church and is a Sun-
day School teacher. She is a mem-
ber of the Thirfty Bees, Home
Demonstration Club and reporter
for the Home Demonstration Coun-
cil.
The Bums have lived in Refugio
four years.
TCTA Committee Meets
With Superintendent
Refugio (Con.) — Committee
members met Tuesday, October 8,
at the home of Dr. Engman, su-
perintendent of schools, to dis-
cuss proposed projects of the Re-
fugio Classroom Teachers Associ-
ation.
Members of the committee were
Mrs. Chiystal Barnhart, Fred
Bohls, Mr. Mary Lou Stanley and
Mrs. Mary Candler.

Refugio. —• A tea and miscel-
aneous shower was given Satur-
day afternoon in the fellowship
hall of the First Baptist Church
complimenting a bride of the past
week, Mrs. Roger Fancher, (nee
Miss Linda Willis). Hostesses were
Mrs. Art Nelson, Mrs. Bill Jen-
kins, Mrs. J. C. Henderson, Mrs.
Anderson Goss, Mrs. Carter
Snooks, Mrs. Jack Lutenbacher,
Mrs. Norman Gilbreath, Mrs. Gra-
dy Fox, Mrs. John Q. O’Neal, and
Mrs. Jerry Sportsman.
In the receiving line with the
honoree were her mother, Mrs. M
G. Choate, her mother - in - law,
Mrs. E. P. Fancher, Mrs. Jenkins
and Mrs. Fox.
Guests registered in a musical
bride’s book to the strains of
Loehngrin’s Wedding March. The
bride’s sister, Miss Janet Choate,
sat at the registry table wlhich
was decorated with a white can-
dle surrounded with small White
flowers.
Miss Dorris Olson played the
piano throughout the afternoon.
Others in the house party were
Mrs. Johnny Baugh and Mrs. Jer-
ry Sportsman who poured punch
and Miss Pat Simjpson who serv-
ed cake.
The table, laid in green, had a
three tiered overskirt of net. A
fall arrangement of yellow mums
was used as a centerpiece. The
cake also was frosted in yellow
and was decorated with a cluster
of wedding hells.
Mr. and Mrs. A. W. McMichael
el of Austin were week end guests
of his sister, Miss Mary L. Mc-
Michael.

following the ordination of their
son, Donald, to the ministry.

Ennis, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Lan-
ders and son, Ruston, and Mrs.

Refugio. (Con.) — The Execu-
tive Board of the Refugio Class-
room Teachers Association met
Thursday night, October 3, in the
Home Economics Cottage of the
Refugio High (School. Mrs. Chrys-
tal Barnhart, president, presided.
The purpose of the meeting was
to formulate plans for the year.
Proposed projects were also dis-
cussed.
Tentative dates set for meeting
are October 16, November 19, Feb-
ruary 18, and April 21.
Building representatives to col-
lect dues were appointed by the
President. They are Mass Fran-
ces Goebel, Primary School; Miss
Patricia Bulhler, Elementary
School; Mrs. Elaine Williams, Jun-
ior High School; Miss Arlene
Bruchmiller, High School.
Appointed by the President to
serve on the Executive Board
were George Williams and Arthur
P. Daley.
The first meeting will be a
“Kick - Off - Breakfast” October
16 ait 6:30 a.mf, in thje High
School Cafeteria.
Board members attending this
meeting were Mrs. Chrystal Barn-
hart, Mrs. Mary Candler, Mrs.
Mayme Day, Mrs. Marie Carroll,
Fred Bohls, Mjss Mary Lou Stanl-
ey and Miss Ida Cantu.

Refugio. — The Refugio Jaycee-
Ettes mpt on regular meeting
night, Thursday, October 3, at the
home of Mrs. James Sheive for a
dinner. Turkey, dressing, cranber-
ry sauce, green beans, tea, hot
rolls, cobbler and ice cream was
served to Mrs. Carl Woodward,
Mrs. Vance Claybrook, Mrs. Rob-
iert F. Anderson, Mrs. Charles
Norman, Mrs. Grady V. Waggon-
er by hostess, Mrs. Sheive.
A regular meeting was then held
;and plans were made to help the
Jaycees sell tickets for the Fair
Dances to be held Thursday, Oc-
tober 10, and Saturday, October
12, at the City Hall. Anyone wish-
ing to purchase tickets may con-
tact any Jaycee or any Jaycee-
Ette.

and Professional Woman’s Club
met at the home of Mrs, Mayme
Day and Miss Mary^ McMichael
for the regular monthly meeting
on Monday, September 30th. Mrs.
Cletis Dulin, president, presided:
After the business meeting, Mrs,
Day, Chairman of the Personal
Development Committee, present-
ed a skit entitled “What Does Your
Mirror Reflect” assisted by mod-
els Betsy Dulin, Susie IDuin, and
Nancy Norman.
A ' beautiful dried arrangement
Was furnished by Mrs. Dulin,
as a door prize and was won
by Mrs. Hazel Baumgartner, who
was a guest at the meeting.
Delicious refreshment were ser-
oved to the seventeen members
and two gutests present.
The next regular meeting will be
Chairman of the Finance Commit-
October 21. Miss Elsie Peacock,
tee will be in charge of the pro-
gram. Hostesses will be Mrs. Wal-
lie Hartmann,, Mrs. Velma Mc-
Laughlin, and Mrs. Ann Windsor.

Refugio. —1 Miss Mary McMich-
ael and Mrs. Maymje Day were
hostesses to the Refugio Woman’s
Club in their honte Wednesday af-
ternoon, October 3.
Mrs. M. C. Heath, Federation
Councelor, discussed the Dimes for
Liberty, project and in the busi-
ness period presided over by Mrs.
Joe Barber, president,, it was de-
cided to participate in the pro-
ject. Two new members, Mrs. R.
H. Hogg and Mrs, Jimmy Camp-
bell were elected. A gfuest, Mrs.
Porterfield, was introduced.
The program entitled “Physical
Fitness as it Applies to the Adult
Woman was presented by Mrs.
Barber.
The hostesses used an autumn
arrangement in shades of yellow
and orange to decorate the re-
freshment table. Mrs, Claude
Brandon served.
The next meeting will be Thurs-
day, October 24, at Which time
the state president, Mrs. A,, T.
Carleton will be the speaker and
other clubs in the county will be
guests.
