are quite pleased with the appar-
ent success of the annual Winter
Formal. We congratulate “The
Kentuckian,” James D. Riddle,
for his command performance in
saving Maid Marian.
We feel that a new twist has
been added to the Annual Beauty
Review. It is rumored that James
Albert “Pete” “Cuddles” Pruett,
Jr. feels that a new twist should
be added to Cactus Pryor’s neck
after his introducing Pete Satur-
day night.
We are glad to have had as
our guest, Stanley Love, Execu-
tive Secretary of Pi Kappa Alpha.
He was on the campus Thursday
and Friday.

New Year.
Taking a look at the world
through the minds of three philo-
sopher-historians—Spengler, Sarot-
kin and Toynbee—Dr. John L. Mc-
Mahon, president of Our Lady of
the Lake College, San Antonio,
sounded an alternate pessimistic
and optimistic note as he address-
ed the students at Southwestern
University recently.
Speaking on “Our Role in This
World,” Dr. McMahon, prominent
educator, reviewed the thoughts of
the philosophers-historians con-
cerning states and cultures, say-
ing, “States and cultures come in-
to existence, flourish, and die; so
do individuals.”
Dr. McMahon pointed out that
according to Spengler western
culture is disintegrating and dy-
ing but states and cultures can do
things to maintain existence and
live; according to Sarotkin, facts
show that people today are not
the superior people they think
they are, sickness of body and
mind characterizing them; and,
according to Toynbee, civilization
survives only when it can meet
the challenge of the time and no
ideology survives that does not
minister to the individual.
The Chapel Speaker last Thurs

ing a message on the power of
