EMS planning 20th birthday
Beach aliens
Myra Taylor, Port Aransas' own shell expert, found something new on the beach last week f hese
sea nettles came from the water around Beach Access Road 1 A, she said On Monday, Aug 25,
she said she received a call from Elizabeth Villines, city Parks and Recreation Department director
about something strange that city employees had seen on the beach Villines and Taylor went down
to the beach and found these interesting little sea nettles, which do make people who touch them
tingle Because Taylor didn't know what the creatures were, she took them to Paul Montagna at the
University of Texas Marine Science Institute, who identified them and said they were not here very
often The first ones she collected were dead, Taylor said, but on T uesday Aug 26, she returned
and collected these, which are alive The little jellyfish-like creatures gracefully undulate through the
water By this week they were all gone back to wherever they usually live (Staff photo by Murray
