cooking and serving.
Forgery
Royal Continental Corporation in
Karachi, Pakistan. In the memo line,
the check said, “For the purchase of
Pakistan rice.”
“It was an actual check,”
Berthelson said. “Everything was
real except they changed who it was
paid to and the amount.”
The bank workers said the check
had been “washed,” meaning every-
thing had been erased and re-dyed.
“It looked really good, but when
you held it up to the light you could
tell something had been done to it,”
Berthelson said.
That check had already gone
through, but since the check was
tampered with, the bank considered
that a forgery and had a parent com-
pany bank pay for the loss.
The church called the police, who
filed a report and suggested the
church get in touch with the FBI,
who in turn suggested they get in
touch with the Secret Service.
“Because of the amount, they
didn’t want me to think that they
would be right on this,” Berthelson
said.
From Page 1
In subsequent conversations,
Berthelson learned that the Secret
Service tracks those types of crimes
and only acts when the money stolen
reaches a certain amount.
Meanwhile, Cedar Hill police
learned that the money order was
placed in a Mastercard office in New
York. The trail went cold after that.
The original check had been sent
to the church’s Senate office and a
call to the office showed they had
never received the payment.
Berthelson was told the church
Senate trusted the people who picked
up the mail. He determined that
someone must have grabbed the
check on its way through the mail.
“You can tell checks in the mail
and somebody could have just
grabbed it out and put it in their
pocket,” Berthelson said.
The time from post office to being
cashed in Pakistan was three days.
Berthelson said he is pleased the
bank is paying for the forged check
and is glad they caught the money
order before the group got away with
anything else.

reported to the EDC board Dec. 4.
And the impact of the center is
also being felt outside of Cedar Hill.
Jerry White, the EDC chairman, told
the group that he recently ran into a
few Duncanville businessmen in
Dallas who were concerned about the
local businesses flocking to Cedar
Hill rather than Duncanville.
“We are being noticed and we are
being felt out here,” White said.
In other business opening news,
Bennigans is set to open Monday,
Dec. 18 for dinner and will begin
their regular schedule of lunch and
dinner on the following day.

establish a literacy program in the
Zula Bryant Wylie Library. We also
will expand our summer and year
round programs for children.
Again, I urge you to support Loan
Star Libraries, a direct aid program
for public libraries that is proposed
by the Texas State Library and
Archives Commission. Direct state
aid for public libraries will make the
difference in our communities,
because it will help ensure that all
Texans have access to the resources
and services they need to succeed in
the information age.
If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to contact me. I look
forward to receiving a response from
you. I thank you in advance, for your
consideration of this critical issue.
