The winner of the pageant
will represent the United States

thousands of dollars in scholar-
ships and other prizes.
Contestants compete in the
traditional categories of inter-
view, swimsuit and evening
gown for a prize package val-

including two modeling con-
tracts, and the title of Miss
Latina USA.
The reigning Miss Latina
USA, Diane Cabrera is a 21-
year-old student at Georgetown
University. The pageant has
also served as a stepping stone

the entertainment industry.

Rice
From Page 2B
season four times.
Is he the greatest football player of all time?
That’s surely up for debate.
One thing is for sure: Denver will be a com-
petitive team next year.
Competitive to the point where the Broncos
can battle for a championship? With the NFL,
you never know. If that’s the case, it would be
nice to see Rice prove the doubters wrong and
go out with another championship.
In all likelihood that won’t happen.
A nice consolation would be to see Rice at
least duplicate last season’s TD totals — three
— which would enable him to retire with a
nice-sounding 200 for his career.
Surely Rice isn’t too old to do that, is he?

Today seeks hometown heroes
By ANGEL JENKINS MORRIS
Today Staff
Do you know a hometown hero? Want to rec-
ognize someone who’s done a good deed or >
gone beyond the call of duty?
Today Newspapers is accepting nominations
now through Friday, July I, of those in the Best
Southwest cities of Cedar Hill, DeSoto,
Duncanville and Lancaster, as well as Mid-
lothian, who readers feel are hometown heroes.
“We had a tremendous response to this last
year, and are sure it will be even greater this
year now that peoplfc understand heroes can be
anyone who has made a difference in their life,”
Today Newspapers Managing Editor Robin
Gooch said.
Nominees can be everyday heroes such as
police and firefighters, community leaders such
as doctors and teachers, or anyone who has
helped make one’s life easier in some special
way. Nominate a friend, relative or even a com-
plete stranger, as long as you can tel) us what
they did that makes them a hero in your eyes.
“We certainly want communities to recog-
nize people like firefighters and law enforce-
ment. We also encourage nominations of people
that might otherwise go unrecognized — like
parents, neighbors or the postal earner — who
have gone out of their way to improv e one per-
son’s life,” Gooch said.
