Bird watchers will count
feathered friends Monday
Bird watchers of all skill levels are
invited to nun the Port Aransas ( hrist
mas Bird Count Monday. Dec 22
Sponsored hv the Port Aransas
Chamber ol Commerce-Tourist Bu-
reau the < hristmas Bird Count is an
attempt to count as many individual
birds and bird species in a calendar
day It is the 21st Port Aransas Christ-
mas Bird Count, said Joan and Scott
Holt w fio are the local coordinators.
Alter the count, birders will gather
at the Holt home to tally up the count
results Anyone interested in counting
may contact the Holts at 749-5656
Each count group has a designated
circle 15 miles in diameter — about
177 square miles — where they try to
cover as much ground as possible
within a 24-hour period. The data col
lecled by each count group is then sent
into National Audubon Society head-
quarters in New York. Count data is
land and urban. 10 percent barrier is
lands and 50 percent estuarine. "So we
cover lots of salt water," Holt said
l.asl year the Port Aransas count
was 164 species, above the average of
158 and keeping Port Aransas in the
lop two percent in the nation A total of
62,756 individual birds were counted,
including 10,140 pintails. 16,972 red-
heads, 4,71 2 dunlin. 7,257 red winged
blackbirds and 2.909 sanderlings
Three new species were added: mourn •
ing warbler, spotted towee and eastern
towee). and many of the species counts
were higher than average.
Holt said high counts of ruddy duck,
crested caracara. piping plover, least
sandpiper and white-eyed vireoamong
others were recorded
"If you were wondering about our
official city bird. 94 roseate spoonbills
were counted," Holt said.

Apart from its attraction as a social,
sporting and competitive event, the
annual count reveals interesting and
scientifically useful information on
the early winter distribution patterns
of various bird species and the over all
health of the environment
The Christmas Bird Count is the
longest running ornithological data-
base.
The count is 1009f volunteer gener-
