THE ALAMQ
out an appeal Tor aicl to assist the
defenders of that fortress against the
constant attacks df the Mexičan Army
under Santa Anna, Responding to his
call, a group of abont 30 men from.
Gomales broke through Santa Anna’s
defenses on iMiarch lst and joined Col.
Travis in the Alamo. The heroic and
stalwart Texans held off the attackers
ifior five more days, as Gen. Santa
Anna’s forees inereased by the hour.
Thus, one of the most heroic strug-
gles in the annals of mankind and
recorded history came to an end on
March 6th, 1836, when the mission-
fortress was overrun and every de-
fender, savé one, a Negro boy, was
killed down to the last man. No other
statě can point to such a struggle
that was eventually climaxed by Victory
at San Jacinto and 'union with the
other states qf the United States.
Stories háve been written, romántic
tales háve been woven around, and
movies háve been made about this
struggle, but simple courage is hard to
depict. This was one without the per-
ennial “ an d - they-lived -happily - e ver -
after” ending. There were no survivors.
The strategie importance of the Bat-
tle of the Alamo was that the days
gave Gen. Sam Houston additional
precious time in which to re-group
and retrain what remained of his army
for the ifinal battle at Slaň Jacinto.
Their cause was not in vain, indeed, it
may well be saicl that the dead at the
Alamo won the war against Mexico.

words and even diferent meanings for
one of the most treasured possessions
among civilized man.
Freedom is a vital part of the rights
and privileges and principles which
are the basis of the systém which has
made America the greatest nation in
the world.
Throughout history, each generation
of Americans has been called upon to
sacrífice life and property to preserve
the blessings of freedom and other
basic values of our American systém. As
citizens, each qf us can do much to
minimize these greater sacrilices by
adopting a personál, ever-day program
of action to preserve our American
heriitage. It would seem that perhaps
none of us should do> less than these
things:
1. Inform ourselves on important is-
sues ... on our American heritage.
2. Ekercise our precious right to vote
in free elections.
3. Work for equal opportunity and
justice for all.
4. Do our part in encoiuraging law
observance and the prevention of
erime and delinquency.
5. Formulate personál convictions,
speaik up when we disagree.
6. Stimulate conscious appreciation
of the principles and ideals for which
America stands.
7. Ask for no privilege which re-
quíres that .we relinquish even a smáli
part of freedom in exchange.
8. Strive for excellence. The strength
of our nation is the sum of the quality
elf all citizens.
What freedoms do you want to pre-
serve for yourself and your children
. . . and your childreiTs children? What
personál sacrifices are you willing to
make to assure these things?
Freedom itsellf leaves choice and ac-
tion to yoiui.
